Spáňov lies at an altitude of 440 metres above sea level, on the boundary between the Všerubská vrchovina and the Podčeskoleská pahorkatina. When planning a stay, it helps to distinguish between the village itself and its immediate surroundings: a late Baroque chapel stands in the village square, while the ruins of Rýzmberk Castle and the Gloriet Klobouk u Kouta lie nearby.
Location and landscape
The slightly elevated woodland of Domažlický háj lies on the western side of Spáňov. A pond used for fire protection and fish farming is located at the southwestern edge of the village. These two features add concrete landmarks on different sides of the village to the description of its location.
The late Baroque chapel in the village square
The chapel dates from the second half of the 18th century. It is hexagonal and has a bell tower; inside is a folk-style painting of the Coronation of the Virgin Mary. The building can therefore be understood both through its form and through a specific religious subject in the painting. Its construction date, architecture and artwork come together here in a single local landmark in the village square—a concise introduction to Spáňov’s cultural history.
Rýzmberk and the history of the pass
The ruins of Rýzmberk Castle, with an observation tower, lie near Spáňov. The castle was founded in the second half of the 13th century on a high hill near Kdyně. Its historical role is linked to the Všerubský průsmyk: Rýzmberk controlled the pass through which an important trade route to Bavaria ran. The site’s history therefore reveals more than the origins of a castle complex: it also points to the connection between the pass, trade and the region towards Bavaria.
The Gloriet, landscape history and a cycle route
The Gloriet Klobouk u Kouta stands on a hill between the villages of Kout na Šumavě and Spáňov. The Kout estate had it built in 1723. The small structure was presumably intended to enliven the park-like landscape and provide the estate with a place to rest and enjoy a beautiful view of Kout Castle and its picturesque surroundings. This cautiously worded interpretation links the Gloriet to the history of landscape design, but differs from Rýzmberk’s medieval castle and pass history.
A cycle route is also named as a planning option: the completed Kout–Spáňov route is part of the planned Domažlice–Kdyně cycle route. The status of this section should be distinguished from that of the larger project: completion applies to Kout–Spáňov.
Views and different historical periods
The Koráb observation tower offers views of Domažlicko, the Český les, Šumava and Bavaria from the area around Spáňov. This brings together different points of interest: Rýzmberk is connected with the history of the pass, while Koráb is known for the views listed above. The Gloriet, in turn, offers a glimpse into the history of a small structure in a park-like landscape.
Comparing the sites by when they were built reveals a clear shift: Rýzmberk was founded in the second half of the 13th century, the Gloriet was built in 1723, and the chapel dates from the second half of the 18th century. This sequence leads from the medieval history of the castle and pass to later sacred architecture and the design of a park-like landscape. It provides a concrete cultural and historical context for considering Spáňov as a destination for a stay.
