Pobezovice can be explored through a variety of themes: sacred architectural history, the memory of the Coudenhove-Kalergi family, the town’s Jewish history and a protected natural monument. The routes also each have their own focus, ranging from a nature trail in the castle park to walks through the history of the town. When planning your visit, therefore, the route’s length is not the only factor to consider; think about which theme you would like to explore in greater depth.
Architectural History and Remembrance
The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary was founded around 1500; its furnishings include items from the 17th to 19th centuries. Its founding and later furnishings offer different perspectives on the history of the same church. The Chapel of St. Procopius was rebuilt in 2013–2014 and consecrated on 26 September 2014. The history of sacred architecture thus spans from a foundation around 1500 to a precisely dated reconstruction and consecration in the 21st century.
The stone Japanese Zen garden commemorates Mitsuko Aoyama Coudenhove-Kalergi and her family’s stay. The family were the last owners of the Pobezovice estate, where they lived until 1945. The garden thus offers a different cultural perspective from the church and chapel: its commemorative purpose relates to a specific family and their history on the estate. The Japanese Zen garden in the castle gardens of Pobezovice is open; check the current access conditions before your visit.
Routes with Different Themes
The Městský okruh is a 4 km sightseeing circuit through Pobezovice. The 2 km Okruh Zámecký park is an educational trail that introduces 13 selected tree species, the history of the park and historical photographs. The route thus combines natural history with the park’s history and photographic records. The Židovský okruh is a 5 km walking route covering the Jewish history of Pobezovice. The 3 km Hřbitovnà okruh leads to three current or former burial sites.
When choosing a route, the options range from the 2 km educational trail in the castle park to the 5 km walking route covering Jewish history. The other two distances, 3 and 4 km, are for the route to the burial sites and the sightseeing circuit through the town. This allows you to match the route length to its theme without treating the different historical focuses as interchangeable.
A Protected Natural Monument
The protected large-leaved lime tree in Pobezovice is about 360 years old and has a trunk circumference of 785 cm. The age is an estimate, while the circumference is a precise measurement; each describes a different aspect of this natural monument. A new path leads to the lime tree and offers two places to sit. The tree can thus be enjoyed as a nature destination in its own right, alongside the cultural and historical attractions.
