Basin, Stream and Village Character
Úsilov lies in a broad basin surrounded by the wooded ridges of the Chudenická vrchovina and the Švihovská vrchovina. The Dubovka flows through the village; two ponds were created along it, the larger of which is called Mlýnský rybník. The landscape, watercourse and village history are therefore closely connected: the basin and ridges set the broader scene, while the stream and ponds provide specific landmarks in the village. Úsilov has preserved its original village buildings and character. Visitors who choose the village as a destination can take in its history and paths within this distinctive landscape.
History of the Fortress
The earliest written mention of Úsilov dates from 1379. In the late 14th century, Úsilov belonged to Švihov Castle. The original fortress was probably built in the second half of the 14th century. The year of its first mention and the probable construction period are two different historical reference points. Drawings from the late 17th century show the fortress under the names “Ausylow” and “Twrz Ausylow”. These depictions date from more than two centuries after the presumed construction period.
The oldest part of the fortress is a tower-like building. Its original form was altered when it was converted into a granary. A square tower and a short Renaissance wing were added later. The fortress was once surrounded by a moat, but no remains of it have survived. The last major alterations took place in 1930. Together, these features reflect a history of construction in several stages: from the oldest tower-like section, through later additions, to the alterations of the 20th century.
Hiking, Cycling and Getting There
A green-marked hiking trail passes through Úsilov. The direction of a crossing is also specified: a hiking trail runs through the village from east to west. Two numbered cycle routes offer different points of reference for cyclists. Cycle Route 2192 runs through the northeastern part of the municipality and through the village. Cycle Route 2193 passes through wooded areas in the western part of the municipality. Route 2192 therefore focuses on the passage through the village, while Route 2193 runs through wooded areas to the west. If you are planning a specific trip, check the current route and conditions in advance.
Nearby, a hiking trail winds through the forests up to Mount Koráb, where there is an observation tower and a restaurant. This makes a hike in the surrounding area a destination in its own right, alongside the routes through Úsilov. Public transport to Úsilov is provided by bus services. If you are travelling by bus, check the timetable before departure.
