A 300-metre-long wooden walkway runs through a wolf enclosure: the Návštěvnické centrum Srní combines nature watching with an unusual view of the grounds. The elevated walkway runs three to four metres above the ground and includes observation huts. Here, you can discover a side of the Pilsen Region where nature experiences and culture have a place alongside local traditions.
The visitor centre also has an approximately two-kilometre educational loop. It covers topics such as Šumava predators and local trees and plants. Visitors with mobility impairments can access the elevated walkway with assistance from the designated car park. Confirm the current access arrangements before your trip. There is a children’s playground next to the building; check in advance whether it will be available during your visit.
Trails through varied landscapes
The Návštěvnické centrum Kvilda also combines a circular route with a specific nature theme. The 2.6-kilometre Jelení stezka runs partly through a deer enclosure and has three observation towers. The route is considered suitable for families with small children, although trail conditions may affect this assessment. Check the current trail and access conditions before your visit.
Šumava National Park extends into the Pilsen Region. However, dozens of tourist routes can be found not only in Šumava, but also beyond it. The Gunther Trail runs through the forests of the Šumava Mountains and picturesque villages. The historic Golden Trail leads to Kašperské Hory and Kašperk Castle. Long-distance trails also include the Vintíř Trail and the Golden Trail; viewpoints, castle ruins and protected natural areas add to the options.
If you prefer to travel by bike, you can combine routes with observation towers, castles, natural attractions and food stops. This lets you include different interests in your tour without every outing having to follow the same theme. Hromnické jezírko offers a different kind of landscape: this natural monument is a remnant of a slate quarry and stands out for its unusual reddish hue. Check local access information before your visit.
Museums, history and living culture
The region’s cultural diversity encompasses galleries, museums, theatres, music festivals and Chodsko folklore. The Škoda Family Museum showcases a remarkable chapter of industrial history. It is dedicated to Emil Škoda, his extended family and more than 150 years of Škoda Works history. Exhibits also include a working electric railway model.
Around 30 mummified bodies can be seen in the Klatovy catacombs, the crypts beneath the Jesuit church. The catacombs also offer insights into the history of the town and the Jesuit order. The Centrum stavitelského dědictví in Plasy offers a different way to explore the past: it focuses on the history of building techniques and materials. It is housed in the former brewery and farm buildings of Plasy Monastery.
The trails and museums reveal different sides of the region; its architectural heritage can also be explored from various perspectives. Attractions range from natural monuments and regional culture to specific aspects of construction and industrial history.
Brewing tradition and relaxation
Beer trails connect 14 well-known breweries in the region and celebrate centuries-old brewing traditions. Ale has been brewed in Chodová Planá since the 12th century. In Klatovy, the Modrý Abbé Beer Studio offers dark Granát lager and Svatý Kryštof, a non-alcoholic, unfiltered beer, as local specialities.
Wellness experiences are another regional attraction: Konstantinovy Lázně offers therapeutic baths and massages. Beer baths are available at Purkmistr, Chodovar and Šumava Herbal Spa. Together with the trails, museums and cultural attractions, they offer a wide range of themes to focus on during your trip through Pilsen.
