Pilgrimage church and monuments

The Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary gives Loučim a distinct historical focal point. In the 14th century, it became an important pilgrimage destination in the Pošumaví region; it is also Loučim’s oldest historical monument. In front of the church stands a sandstone statue of Saint John of Nepomuk dating from 1818. Four mighty, nearly 200-year-old protected lime trees surround the statue. Here, religious history, a monument with an exact date and protected trees come together in one place. On a cultural trip, you can explore the church’s pilgrimage history alongside the statue and the trees as distinct heritage themes.

Another architectural feature is the projecting tower in front of the church, which probably dates from the early 16th century. Its dating remains tentative. Loučim’s religious history as a pilgrimage destination since the 14th century is thus complemented by a later feature of the church’s architecture. While the statue’s date of 1818 is certain, the tower can only probably be dated to the early 16th century.

Pilgrimages and trails

The Marian pilgrimages provide a specific seasonal connection. The autumn pilgrimage takes place on the Sunday after 8 September; a second, so-called spring pilgrimage is held on Easter Monday. The two dates fall in different seasons. If you would like to time your visit to coincide with a church service, check the service details for the relevant year before travelling.

For walkers and cyclists, the two routes differ above all in their course and theme. The Stezka zpomalení is a Czech-German themed trail with spiritual reflections, as well as a cross-border walking and cycling route from Neukirchen beim Heiligen Blut to Loučim; additional circular routes complement it. The Loučim educational trail follows a different format: it forms a loop through the forests north of the municipality and leads back to Loučim. This means a cross-border route and a loop returning to Loučim offer two distinct options.

The educational trail has eight stops, with texts in Czech and German. Its themes range from local nature and history to Jewish culture and ecology. This gives it a different focus from the Stezka zpomalení, with its spiritual reflections. When choosing, you may wish to consider the circular route, languages and thematic focus. Check the signs on site.

More traces of local history

The town’s architectural and protected heritage extends beyond the pilgrimage church. The Jewish cemetery in Loučim is an immovable cultural monument. House No. 3 is a partly timber-framed, three-part dwelling of the barn type; it may date from as early as the period spanning the first third to the middle of the 19th century. These are two different kinds of classification: the cemetery’s formal monument status, and the building type and tentative dating of a dwelling. For visitors interested in local heritage, Loučim’s range of themes thus extends from religious history and Jewish cultural heritage to rural residential architecture.
