A stay in Úboč can be planned around two themes: the village’s architectural history and the marked hiking and cycling routes that pass through Úboč. If you are looking for a holiday apartment for your stay, you can first decide whether buildings or a tour should be the main focus. Information about the roads and railway can then help you plan your journey.
St. Nicholas Church: Building History in Several Stages
St. Nicholas Church is a single-nave early Gothic church dating from the 13th century. In the second half of the 14th century, a new chancel and a sacristy were added. During the Baroque alterations, St. Anne’s Chapel, with an oratory and a stairway extension, was built in 1763. The building’s history therefore comprises several clearly distinguishable periods: its early Gothic origins were followed by additions in the 14th century and, later, the chapel built in 1763. This sequence gives a more informative picture of the church than viewing it as a building from just one period.
Fortification Remains, Granary and Memorial Tree
Other surviving buildings also give Úboč a historic character. Notable examples of folk architecture include a masonry granary built using masonry from the demolished Church of St. Wenceslas. The granary thus connects two buildings: materials from a church that no longer exists were used for a surviving building.
In the rectory garden, remains of the Úboč fortress survive as horseshoe-shaped ditches and ramparts. In places, the ramparts reach a height of up to five metres. Their form and surviving earthworks are clearly distinct from the buildings in the village landscape and add another kind of evidence to the picture of Úboč’s history.
A landmark in the landscape is the Jehlíkova lípa, a memorial tree on the dam of the pond above the mill. It is estimated to be about 350 years old. This approximate age makes the tree a long-standing point of reference, but it remains an estimate rather than an exact figure.
Hiking Trail and Cycling Circuit
Úboč also lies along marked routes. A green-marked hiking trail leads you 15.5 kilometres from the ruins of Netřeb through Úboč to the Koráb lookout tower. If you plan to take this route, check the trail markings locally. The route and its endpoints help with choosing a tour: it links the ruins of Netřeb with the lookout tower and includes Úboč along the way.
For a cycling trip, the blue-marked Chudenice cycling circuit is another option. It is about 55 kilometres long and passes through Úboč between Němčice and Všepadly. Compared with the hiking route, it is considerably longer and is designated as a circuit; the hiking route, by contrast, lists the ruins of Netřeb and the Koráb lookout tower as its starting and ending points. The different lengths and routes provide a practical basis for choosing between hiking and cycling, without combining the two into a single tour.
Getting There and Planning Your Stay
A class III road runs through Úboč; the connection to a higher-class road is in Němčice. There is no railway in the village. You can compare this information with your planned mode of transport when preparing a stay or looking for a holiday apartment. To plan what to see, you can distinguish the village’s architectural history from its marked routes: the church, granary and fortification remains represent different aspects of the historic village landscape, while the hiking trail and cycling circuit show Úboč as part of different route itineraries.
