Semněvice stands out on a plateau above the surrounding countryside. Two distinct features shape the village: its architectural history, centred on Kostel sv. Jiří, and the views from the lookout area. From there, the view extends to Sedmihoří Nature Park and Český les. Weather and vegetation affect visibility, so the long-distance view can vary from one visit to another.
Views and walking routes in the countryside
The lookout area includes a wooden observation tower and a pavilion with seating. This combines a viewpoint with a place to sit. Check the current condition of the facilities before visiting. For the undeveloped area of Semněvice, the municipal plan provides for recreation, walking and cycling on the farm tracks used for these purposes in the countryside. Local path conditions may change; take them into account when planning a specific trip.
Kostel sv. Jiří and its architectural history
In its statement of 17 June 2026, the municipality lists Kostel sv. Jiří as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic. The church was first mentioned in written records in 1356. Its architecture can be described through several distinct features: it has a single nave and a rectangular floor plan, a projecting prismatic tower on the west façade, and a three-sided chancel. The floor plan, tower position and chancel shape each offer a different insight into the building’s form; the year 1356 provides a separate historical reference point.
As part of the annual Noc kostelů event, Semněvice offered a guided tour of Kostel sv. Jiří in 2026. If you would like to include an event in your trip, check the dates for the year you plan to visit: the specific guided tour was part of the 2026 programme.
Baroque art and village architecture
Other details also connect art with local history. The statue of Saint John of Nepomuk is a late Baroque work by the sculptor Karel Legát of Plzeň. A chronogram dates it to 1747. At the Semněvice rectory, the inscription on the portal’s keystone points to a different year: it dates the building to 1739. The rectory is a High Baroque building.
Another architectural feature is the Venkovská usedlost, a protected monument and an example of more recent vernacular architecture. Its richly designed façade echoes the rhythm of the gabled façades typical of the buildings around the village square. In Semněvice, sacred architecture, a dated statue and the design of a rural façade thus offer distinct perspectives on local history.
Spring and event dates
The rybářské závody (fishing competitions) were held in Semněvice again on 27 April 2024. These competitions have traditionally been part of the spring semněvické poutě sv. Jiří. Event dates and specific arrangements may vary. Check them before travelling if you would like to plan your stay around such an occasion.
