Puclice offers several points of interest for a stay: the fortress, a chapel on the village square, the Jewish cemetery and an observation tower south of the village. Together, they offer an opportunity to focus on local history, architecture and landscape. When planning, it is worth distinguishing between the historical information and the conditions for visiting each site.
The Puclice Fortress and its history
The Puclice Fortress is currently open to the public by prior arrangement. If you would like to visit, arrange your visit in advance. This current access requirement is a practical point to consider when planning; separately, there is the fortress’s historical role: after 1765, it ceased to function as a feudal manor. This makes it possible to combine a visit with a look at how the village changed in the past, without confusing the historical date with current access arrangements.
The chapel and local history
The Chapel of St. Mary Magdalene (sv. Maří Magdalény) stands on the village square, west of the pond. It is a freestanding, masonry building with plastered walls and a regular hexagonal floor plan. Its designation as a central-plan chapel and its hexagonal shape make its basic structure a striking feature: its architecture can therefore be understood not only through its location, but also through its geometry.
The earliest recorded references to Puclice date from the second half of the 14th century. The Jewish cemetery is dated later: it is said to have been established in 1750. These details refer to different things—the early references concern Puclice in general, while the year refers to the cemetery—and the cemetery’s founding is presented as a reported date, not a confirmed fact. The cemetery is also a point of interest on Route 1/1400, which passes through Puclice.
Views from Křižovatka Hill
The wooden Puclice observation tower stands on Křižovatka Hill, south of the village. It is permanently open and free to access. From there, parts of the Švihovská vrchovina, Všerubská vrchovina and Český les can be seen. The tower thus adds a landscape-focused highlight to the historical and architectural attractions in the village. The views encompass these three landscape areas; all are only partially visible.
Getting to Puclice and finding accommodation
From the main road from Plzeň, Puclice can be reached via Staňkov, Křenov or Semošice. These routes give you several options for planning your journey.
If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Puclice, the local attractions can help you decide. For a stay focused on history and architecture, the fortress, chapel and cemetery offer different themes; the observation tower adds views of the surrounding landscape areas. Be sure to factor in the need to arrange a public visit to the fortress in advance.
