A tunnel for cyclists, digital insights into archaeological traces, and routes linking cultural heritage with open landscapes: Saône-Et-Loire can be explored from several perspectives. When planning your trip, it is worth first choosing the kind of discovery you want to shape your stay: archaeological interpretation, nature, or a longer route on foot or by bike. The examples below differ in scale and experience, and need not form a single fixed itinerary.

Archaeological traces and digital interpretation

At the foot of the archaeological site is the Bibracte Museum. It presents walls, craft workshops, houses, public spaces and the necropolis. The selection ranges from built areas to the burial ground, drawing attention to different parts of the site. The virtual gallery features more than 150 objects from the museum’s collections and the world of Bibracte. Cluny uses a different form of interpretation: digital reconstructions, augmented-reality stations and a 3D film interpret the remains that have survived and those that have disappeared. If you are comparing cultural attractions, you will find two different approaches: a virtual gallery of objects, and digital images and film that reconstruct traces of the past.

Nature and landscape

The ENS-71 network in Saône-Et-Loire includes six sites owned by the département and one site currently awarded the ENS-71 label. The sites showcase the département’s habitats, fauna and flora. Existing ENS-71 sites are free to access year-round, and nature educators offer themed group visits there. You can explore the nature sites independently or consider joining a themed group visit. In the Mâconnais, karst cliffs and vineyards stretching towards the Saône shape the landscape. Here, the focus is on geological formations and winegrowing; the ENS sites, by contrast, are about habitats, animals and plants.

Comparing cycling and walking routes

The Boucle de Bourgogne du Sud is a 144-kilometre cycling route. It links the Voie Verte of the Côte chalonnaise with the Voie Bleue between Chalon-sur-Saône and Mâcon, combining cycling with gastronomy and oenology. On the Mâcon–Cluny section, the route passes through the Bois-Clair Tunnel, considered the longest tunnel in Europe open to cyclists. The Voie Verte between Buxy and Cluny was France’s first Voie Verte.

The Via Cluny is on a different scale: this 550-kilometre Franco-Swiss walking route runs from Payerne to Cluny and comprises 26 stages, two variants and eleven possible loops. This gives you a choice of different ways to travel and route structures: a cycling route that incorporates gastronomy and oenology, and a walking route with stages, variants and loops. The Canal-du-Centre route offers another emphasis. It links cultural and industrial heritage with open landscapes, is fully signposted in both directions and includes the restored Moulin de Sorine.

Food and getting there

At the Maison du Charolais, L’expérience Charolaise includes a guided tasting. If you are looking for a specific culinary experience as well as routes and landscapes, this is a distinct item to add to your itinerary.

Cluny is served by bus route LR 701, which runs between Chalon-sur-Saône, Cluny and Mâcon. Bus timetables can change, so check the current service before travelling. Chalon-sur-Saône and Mâcon are starting points for the Boucle de Bourgogne du Sud and are served by trains that carry bicycles. If you are travelling by bike, check current train times and the conditions for taking a bicycle on board. Bus and rail options are separate planning considerations: the bus route connects the three places named, while the rail information concerns bicycle carriage.
