Two named routes offer specific points of reference when planning a trip to Montmort. The circular route “Circuit 8: Bois du Nom - Montmort” is suitable for hiking and mountain biking; its route description was updated on July 31, 2026. For the “Autour de Montmort” hiking route, a description created in December 2023 gives a distance of 10.35 kilometres. This gives you different information to choose from: the first route covers two activities, while the second gives a specific hiking distance. The distance helps you fit the hike into your day; your personal walking time depends on your pace. If you are considering Montmort as a destination, you can make your choice based on your preferred activity and the planned distance.

Hiking Trails with Different Highlights

The “Autour de Montmort” hike starts in a small square in the town centre, where parking is available. A path leads towards Armecy, with the Arroux running to the left. Towards the Bois du Nom, a stream is crossed; the path then continues for about 800 metres to a junction. The distance given refers to the section after crossing the stream and is approximate. The starting point in town and the parking help you prepare; check both again before setting out.

Fir Forest and Country Lanes

The descriptions of the landscape and surfaces also differ. “Autour de Montmort” passes through a fir forest. A user-contributed description of the “RANDO Montmort Bois Du Nom” route, modified on February 2, 2021, mentions about 200 metres on roads; the rest of the route passes through forest and along country lanes. As the description dates from 2021, check the route before your hike. The 10.35 kilometres and the roughly 200 metres on roads answer different questions: one gives the length of a hike, while the other describes the road section of a different route.

Archaeology at Mont de Jaux

An archaeological discovery is the focus at Mont de Jaux. During investigations in September 1986, 2,500 metres of excavation trenches were opened; a ditch measuring 120 metres long and 6 metres wide was uncovered. In its preserved state, it was 1.5 metres deep. At 120 metres long, the ditch is twenty times as long as it is wide; this comparison makes its dimensions easier to picture. For travellers interested in archaeology, this focus adds a historical perspective to the hiking trails.

Montmort as a Base for Your Hotel Search

If a central starting point matters to you, keep the starting point at the small square in the town centre in mind when choosing your accommodation base; if you prioritise the character of the route, compare it using the woodland, road and country-lane sections mentioned.
