Berzé-la-Ville brings together Romanesque frescoes, traces of the village’s history and industry, and a viewpoint at an elevation of 455 metres. These varied themes give your visit a clear focus: you can explore the building history and frescoes, or make the view over the hilly landscape and the Val Lamartinien the centrepiece of your visit. When planning your trip, you can decide whether you are more interested in cultural heritage, landscapes, or a combination of both.

Romanesque Art and Building History

The Chapelle des Moines is the Romanesque chapel of a Cluniac priory and is known for its exceptional frescoes. Its history is also linked to a discovery made in 1887: Philibert Jolivet, parish priest of Berzé-la-Ville, found traces of wall paintings beneath the thick whitewash on the walls. An admission ticket gives you access to both the lower and upper chapels. As visitor arrangements may change, it is advisable to check the latest information before your visit.

The Église de la Purification de la Vierge offers another glimpse into the village’s building history. Its Romanesque bell tower dates from the 11th century, and its features include a painted decoration from the 16th century. Comparing these dates reveals different historical layers: a medieval building element stands alongside a much later painted decoration. Together with the Chapelle des Moines, it offers a cultural theme that encompasses both architecture and wall painting.

Kilns, Washhouses, and a Fountain

The Fours à Plâtre combine a 19th-century building with a carefully structured kiln complex. Six rectangular kilns are visible on the lower level, while the upper level contains two circular kilns with continuous firing. Their different shapes and arrangement across two levels give the building its distinctive structure. The Fours à Plâtre were listed as historic monuments on 28 February 1994.

Smaller structures also tell the story of the village. The washhouses of Berzé-la-Ville were built in the second half of the 19th century. The two-storey fountain was built as a small ashlar tower and roofed with lauze stones. Those interested in rural and architectural heritage will find, alongside the chapel and church, other features of a very different character: an industrial site, washhouses, and a fountain. Each can be explored on its own, without having to follow a set sightseeing route.

Hillside Setting and Views

Berzé-la-Ville lies on a slope at the foot of the wooded rocky outcrop of La Roche Coche. The surrounding countryside is hilly, with vineyards and meadows typical of the bocage landscape. La Roche Coche reaches an elevation of 455 metres and offers panoramic views of Berzé-la-Ville and the Val Lamartinien. This viewpoint offers a different way to experience the village than its historic buildings: here, the elevation, wooded rock, and open landscape shape the view.

The area’s natural setting is also part of this landscape. The entire listed area of Berzé-la-Ville lies within the Type II ZNIEFF natural area “La Côte Mâconnaise.” This designation applies to the area as a whole. It adds a broader landscape context to the description of the village without equating the individual cultural sites with the natural area classification.

A Visit with Different Focal Points

The “Les merveilles de Berzé-la-Ville” route was established in collaboration with the “Les Amis du Vieux Berzé” association and invites visitors to discover the village’s exceptional cultural heritage. It suits the wide range of local attractions, from the frescoes in the Romanesque chapel to the kilns and historic buildings, and the landscape at the foot of La Roche Coche. When choosing accommodation, you can first consider whether you want to focus your stay mainly on culture, the landscape, or both.
