Discover Vergisson through its cliffs, trails, early history and winegrowing. The Roche de Vergisson is a landmark for scenic views and climbing; the village is also part of the Pouilly-Fuissé appellation. When planning a trip, you can decide whether to focus on outdoor activities, views over the vineyards, archaeological traces or Chardonnay.

Cliffs, trails and views

Numerous marked hiking trails around La Roche lead to various viewpoints. From the summit of the Roche de Vergisson, you can see the village and the vineyards below, the Roche de Solutré opposite, and, in the distance, the mountains of the Beaujolais.

The Roche is also an important landmark for climbing. Vergisson has climbing routes for all levels at two locations: La Roche and Le Parvis. The climbing area at the Roche de Vergisson includes grades 4 to 8a. Restrictions may apply in protected areas. Paragliding is also possible, but is intended for experienced participants; expert safety advice is required.

Vergisson also has varied trails through vineyards and forests, with differing levels of technical difficulty. The available information offers different guidance for planning a hike: marked trails around La Roche lead to viewpoints, while the forest and vineyard trails vary in difficulty.

Near the car park by the town hall, there is a picnic and play area, as well as toilets. If you plan to use these facilities for a break, check that they are currently available before your visit, as they may occasionally be unavailable.

Archaeological traces from different periods

The caves of the Roche de Vergisson provide an archaeological link to the village’s history: Neanderthals inhabited various caves during the Mousterian period.

In the western part of Vergisson, people found sandstone at the end of the Stone Age for building dolmens and menhirs. A menhir in the hamlet of Chancerons was erected at the beginning of the 19th century. These traces span widely different periods: the caves were used during the Mousterian, sandstone for dolmens and menhirs was found at the end of the Stone Age, and the menhir at Chancerons was not erected until the beginning of the 19th century.

Pouilly-Fuissé and wine tastings

Vergisson is one of the four villages in the Pouilly-Fuissé appellation, where only white wines made from Chardonnay are produced. The other three villages are Chaintré, Fuissé and Solutré-Pouilly. This gives the village a specific connection to wine through an appellation and a grape variety.

At the foot of the Roche de Vergisson, Domaine Carrette offers wine tastings and direct sales in its cellar by prior arrangement. If you plan to include a tasting in your stay, arrange your visit in advance.
