Baudrières can be explored through two very different themes: Romanesque heritage and nature at the Étang de la Verne. The Église Saint-Pierre and the historic sites in Tenarre each offer their own highlights; at the Étang, the focus is on a wetland and its circular trail. If you are looking for hotels in Baudrières, the focus of your stay can guide your choice: architectural history, the sites in Tenarre or a nature outing. A longer hike is another option, with the Circuit de Baudrières.
Circular Trail and Wetland at the Étang de la Verne
The Étang de la Verne is in the hamlet of Tenarre and is easy to access. Two large car parks are available there. An educational trail runs through the wetland, with boardwalks and signs shaping this nature visit. The walk is therefore characterised not only by its destination at the water, but also by its design as a learning trail.
For visitors with reduced mobility, there are two reserved parking spaces, an accessible path and an adapted boardwalk at the Étang. This information applies to the facilities at the Étang. It is advisable to check the current facilities before travelling. This makes it possible to plan a visit to the wetland with specific needs in mind, without applying the conditions described to other places in Baudrières.
Romanesque History at the Église Saint-Pierre
The Église Saint-Pierre in Baudrières dates from the 11th century. Its portal features a modillion cornice, a specific architectural detail that offers a point of interest in addition to the church’s age. The year 1081 is also important for understanding its history: at that time, Gautier de Couches, the Bishop of Chalon, handed the church of Baudrières over to Francon, the Abbot of Tournus. The construction date and the transfer offer different ways of exploring the site’s history.
Ferme de Tenarre and Moulin Bas
The Ferme de Tenarre offers a later historical highlight. Its history begins in 1641. This creates a clear contrast in chronology with the church, which dates from the 11th century, without implying that 1641 was the farm’s construction year. Its architectural features include a gallery with wooden crosses hewn with an axe. In addition, the façade, roof and chimney were included in the supplementary inventory of historic monuments.
Moulin Bas in Tenarre is a mill beside a pond. This adds another historic site with a different character to the selection: here, the focus is on the mill and pond, while the Église Saint-Pierre is described through its date and portal, and the farm through its history and structural features. Those interested in heritage will therefore find more than a single architectural highlight in Baudrières.
Hike or Circular Trail: Two Ways to Experience Nature
The Circuit de Baudrières (BAUD1) is a 19 km hiking route. It is therefore markedly different from the educational circular trail at the Étang: the Circuit has a specified hiking distance, while boardwalks and signs shape the walk through the wetland at the Étang. Your choice therefore depends not only on whether you want to experience nature, but also on which format you want to shape your stay.
The 19 km Circuit can also be considered as a hiking-focused option in its own right. Check accommodation availability for your travel dates.
