Monumental stainless-steel sculptures and a flower maze stand side by side in Parc du Château d’Aux. This combination is one of several facets of Gueugnon: the town brings together art in the park and a layered history with the hilly landscape of the Charolais.

Gueugnon between the Arroux and the Charolais

Gueugnon stretches across the hilly landscape of the Charolais. The Arroux divides the town into eastern and western districts. The river and the hills give the area different geographical features: here, the water divides the town, while the undulating landscape shapes its surroundings. If you are planning a themed stay, you can explore the town’s history and its connection to the landscape as distinct perspectives.

Sculptures and parkland at Château d’Aux

Château d’Aux is a bourgeois estate dating from the late 19th century. It stands in a park that slopes down towards the Arroux. Parc du Château d’Aux is home to an open-air museum with monumental stainless-steel sculptures. The park also includes a 620 m² flower maze with 17 varieties of wildflowers. The sculptures add an artistic touch, while the maze brings a horticultural one. As its condition can change with maintenance, check the maze’s current condition before visiting.

Church, industrial history and archaeology

Église Saint-Maurice combines neo-Gothic forms with Romanesque elements. It was built in the 1870s to replace a church dating from the 11th century. This sequence reveals the town’s long building history, while the church’s different styles offer a distinct architectural theme.

At the Musée du Patrimoine Gueugnonnais, the history of the ironworks spans from their founding in 1724 to the present day. A permanent archaeological section focuses on Vieux Fresne, a Gallo-Roman centre of ceramic production. In its own geology room, the museum displays local minerals and fossils. Industrial development, the history of ceramics and geology thus offer distinct perspectives.

The Musée du Patrimoine Gueugnonnais season ends each year with the European Heritage Days. Alongside the museum, a pottery studio offers public introductory sessions in throwing pottery in July and August. Check the specific dates for these seasonal events before travelling.

Cycle to the sculpture park

Loop No. 5 from Paray-le-Monial leads to Gueugnon and the park with its monumental sculptures. The route is 49 km long and rated easy for cyclists and mountain bikers. This means the park can be seen not only as a destination for art, but also as a stop on a designated cycling route. Check the route and signage before setting off.

Local products

La Boutique Partagée offers local food and handmade goods through a direct route from farm or studio to shop, without intermediaries. The boutique brings together 27 local craftspeople, producers and creatives, who take turns selling their own products. This complements the historical collections and park art with a look at local products and the people who make them. The product selection and participating sellers may change.
