Montret offers several points of interest for a stay: the architectural history of Saint-Loup, the historic Roman road, the Serrée, recurring local events and a designated cycling route. For a short stay, it helps to choose your focus first: local history, a specific event date or a visit to the Ferme de Viennette.
Church, Roman Road and Local History
The present-day Saint-Loup Church was built in 1862. An earlier church in Montret stood near a spring on the downhill bend from the town centre towards Saint-Vincent; it was demolished in the first half of the 19th century. The time gap makes the histories of the two buildings easy to distinguish: the earlier church was demolished before the present one was built. Montret is also located on the Roman road from Chalon to Lons via Louhans. This connection to the road broadens the perspective from individual buildings to a historic link between these places.
The Serrée rises in Montret. In the past, it formed the boundary between the area governed by written law and the area governed by customary law. This means the stream has not only natural significance but also a historic role as a boundary. The terms refer to two different legal areas and connect the watercourse’s local significance with legal history.
Events and Produce from Montret
Several local events take place in Montret every year. Recurring events include flea markets and sporting events, as well as banquets, a fair, communal meals, sales with tastings and illuminations. The different formats offer a variety of reasons to plan a stay around a particular date. If you would like to make an event the occasion for your trip, check the specific date in advance; individual dates may change.
The Magasin de la Ferme in Montret sells seasonal farm and market-garden produce, along with meals and other products made in its own workshop. The selection therefore includes both seasonal produce and prepared dishes. As product availability and opening arrangements may vary, check before visiting.
Cycling Route and Visits
The permanent “A la découverte de la Bresse Bourguignonne” cycling route carries FFCT distinction No. 165 and passes through Montret. Before setting off, check the route conditions and available information. The Route Européenne D'Artagnan also passes through the Montret area; here too, it is advisable to check the conditions before setting out.
From May to October, the Ferme de Viennette offers farm visits for groups by appointment. Group visits are therefore limited to a specific period and require advance arrangements. Confirm visit availability before your trip if you plan to take this tour.
Planning Your Journey and Accommodation Search
