Explore Montchanin through its industrial history, the Canal du Centre and excursions on foot or by bike. When choosing a destination, it is worth considering its different highlights: churches and factory architecture tell the story of the town; waterways, a walking route and a cycling section offer further perspectives. This will help you decide whether your trip should focus mainly on historic buildings, exploring nature or following a specific route.

Industrial History and Buildings

Montchanin lies at the heart of an important coalfield, mined by the Houillères de Montchanin from the 1820s until 1912. Individual buildings bring this history to life. The parish church, the Eglise paroissiale, was built in 1846–1847 by the Société des Houillères de Montchanin. When the commune of Montchanin-les-Mines was established in 1854, the church was given parish status. Its floor plan is in the shape of a Latin cross, and it was built from Belgian bricks.

The Fonderie Henri-Paul is another testament to Montchanin’s industrial history. Construction began in June 1918 by the Etablissements Schneider du Creusot; the first casting took place on 19 June 1920. The sections of the building differ in their layout: the cast-iron foundry has five bays, while the bronze foundry and the storage and changing building each have three. These details offer a concrete view of the foundry’s architectural layout.

The Cinéma Les Variétés is also part of the town’s cultural history. It was built in 1921 and opened on 24 September of that year, with 719 seats. The station district also features several richly decorated houses associated with the Grande Tuilerie de Bourgogne. Together with the church and foundry, they broaden the picture of the town’s architectural history, although not all these sites share the same historical background.

The Canal du Centre and Routes

The Canal du Centre makes river tourism possible in Montchanin. A section with seven locks runs between Montchanin and Chagny. The Bois-Brétoux port and landing stage offers another perspective on the area’s relationship with water: it comprises a quay, a house and a workshop, as well as an old canal branch, a tugboat, a boat and a crane. This allows you to distinguish between a named lock route and the specific features of a port facility.

For an excursion into nature on foot, the walking route in Montchanin includes the Marais du Pont des Morands and its 1.5 km nature trail. It is intended for exploring the local flora and fauna. A longer option is the “Sur les traces d’un passé entre terre et eau (MCH)” walking route: it is listed as a 16 km, moderately difficult walk taking four hours. The stated times are not guaranteed to be current. Check the latest trail conditions before setting out, and allow for flexibility when planning your walk.

For cyclists, a designated section of EuroVelo 6 runs from Montchanin to Saint-Léger-sur-Dheune. Unlike the walking routes, this section is defined by its two endpoints. Check current route conditions before cycling, too. This gives you several ways to plan your activity: a short nature trail, a longer moderate walk or a designated cycling section.
