Saint-Didier-Sur-Arroux combines open bocage countryside, a wetland with diverse vegetation and birdlife, marked routes, and a rich architectural history. For planning, the routes offer different profiles: “Autour de l'Etang” is a moderately difficult 9 km route for hiking, mountain biking, and e-biking; the “Circuit VTT-FCC Saint-Didier-sur-Arroux” is a difficult 21 km mountain bike route. The parish church, a fish farm, and the ruins of the Château de Charency add distinct historical and cultural highlights.

Bocage Countryside and Wetland

Saint-Didier-Sur-Arroux lies in the open bocage countryside of the Arroux and Braconne valleys. Large areas of meadow and farmland, low hedges, and small wooded areas shape the landscape. At Étang de Boussons, diverse wetland vegetation grows, including the legally protected water clover Marsilea quadrifolia. Little bitterns nest along the shore; migratory birds regularly stop there, including snipes, golden plovers, and red-throated divers.

The valley bocage is an open cultural landscape, while the Étang brings wetland vegetation and individual bird species to the fore. This gives rise to two distinct nature themes: the valleys shaped by meadows, farmland, hedges, and small wooded areas on the one hand, and the habitat by the water on the other.

Marked Routes with Different Profiles

“Autour de l'Etang” starts and ends at Place de l'Eglise in Saint-Didier-Sur-Arroux. This marked, moderately difficult loop is 9 km long and designated for hiking, mountain biking, and e-biking. It leads to Étang de Bousson and along its shore. This route therefore combines a loop with a connection to the pond shore.

The marked “Circuit VTT-FCC Saint-Didier-sur-Arroux” is considerably longer at 21 km, with 500 m of elevation gain, and is rated difficult. It starts and ends in Saint-Didier-Sur-Arroux and runs between forest and pond. Compared with “Autour de l'Etang,” the two routes differ both in their stated difficulty and in their activities: the 9 km loop is described for three modes of travel, while the Circuit VTT-FCC is a mountain bike route. Check current route conditions before setting out.

Another option is “Les Collines de l'Arroux”: this marked, difficult route is 13.7 km long, has 350 m of elevation gain, and starts and ends in Saint-Didier-Sur-Arroux. The three routes can therefore be distinguished by length, difficulty, and the activities listed for each, without assuming a walking or riding time.

Church and Historic Buildings

The current parish church stands in the village center and replaced an undated medieval church. The parish has been documented since the 9th century. When the present church was rebuilt in 1846, stones and building materials from the demolished church of Thil-sur-Arroux were used. Its design comprises a rectangular floor plan, a projecting bell tower, a nave with few openings, and an adjoining choir. The building thus offers a glimpse both of the parish's long history and of a specific 19th-century construction phase.

The Pêcherie de Bousson retains its technical equipment and terraced basins. It is put back into operation once a year. Above Étang de Bousson stand the imposing 19th-century ruins of the Château de Charency. The surviving remains include an octagonal tower and one of the square towers; the chapel is in good condition. The Château is privately owned and not open to visitors; the ruins can only be viewed from the surrounding area.
