Montagny-sur-Grosne offers several points of interest for a stay: the architecture and history surrounding the Church of Saint-Fiacre and Ouilly, the Fête du pain held every year, and routes that start at the washhouse. The landscape also shapes the area, from the hilltop with views of the Mâconnais, Beaujolais and Clunisois heights to stretches of woodland and meadows along the described routes.

Saint-Fiacre: Church Architecture and Bell

The parish church of Montagny-sur-Grosne is dedicated to Saint-Fiacre. It was rebuilt slightly north of the site of the former church, beside the RD 289. Its layout consists of a single nave, a broad chancel bay, a semicircular apse and two side chapels. The building can therefore be understood through its spatial sequence: from the nave to the chancel bay and on to the apse, with the two side chapels alongside.

The bell is another distinctive feature. It dates from 1597 and was listed as protected on 11 April 1932. Together, the building’s design and the bell give a visit to the church a clear cultural and historical focus: alongside the structure of the building, there is also a single historic object with its own date.

Ouilly and the History of the Château

The Ouilly estate, which includes the Château d’Ouilly, is documented under the name Williel from the beginning of the 12th century. Léon Bruys had the old residence at Ouilly demolished and built an Italian-style château in its place. The history of the area thus brings together the estate’s early recorded name and the later construction of a château in place of the former residence.

The Château d’Ouilly is currently privately owned. When planning your visit, treat it as part of the area’s history and do not assume that public visits are available. Even without a guaranteed visit, its historical connection remains a distinct aspect of Montagny-sur-Grosne’s cultural history.

Hiking and Cycling Route from the Washhouse

The MSG1 circular walking trail starts at the washhouse in Montagny-sur-Grosne. It has 168 metres of elevation gain and is rated easy. Along the way, the route reaches a viewpoint over the Grosne valley and passes through woodland and between woodland and meadows. These details give you concrete points of reference when assessing the hike: its stated difficulty, elevation gain and the landscape along the trail.

The cycling route “The grand tour” also starts at the washhouse in Montagny-sur-Grosne. It leads into the Esmyards forest and crosses a meadow. When choosing a route, you can compare the details side by side: for MSG1, the easy rating, 168 metres of elevation gain and the viewpoint over the Grosne valley are specified; for “The grand tour,” the description focuses on woodland and a crossing through a meadow. The two routes thus differ in the landscape and planning features highlighted.

Hilltop and Landscape Features

Montagny is described as a village on a hill overlooking the valley, with sweeping views of the Mâconnais, Beaujolais and Clunisois heights. Another specific landscape feature is the Vallon du Raverot: ecologically, it forms part of the extensive Natura 2000 zone of the Clunisois. A dense population of yellow-bellied toads lives in the small area of the Vallon du Raverot. The valley therefore combines a link to a named protected area with a population of this amphibian species specifically located there.

An Annual Event

Since 2002, the Comité des fêtes has organised the Fête du pain every year. If you would like to coordinate your stay with the festival, check the date before your trip. Alongside the church, local history and different routes, the festival offers another way to experience Montagny-sur-Grosne, without prescribing a set itinerary.
