Étang-sur-Arroux lies at the confluence of the three valleys of the Braconne, Mesvrin and Arroux, and is a gateway to the Morvan Regional Natural Park. The banks of the Arroux and Place du Champ de Foire are ideal for walks and picnics. Étang-sur-Arroux is also particularly well suited to fishing because of its abundance of fish. Between these landscapes and historic sites, there are several ways to spend your time: walks with cultural destinations, cycling routes along the river, and visits to the museum or swimming pool.

Exploring on foot or by bike

The Tour de la butte de La Perrière starts at Place du Champ de Foire in Étang-sur-Arroux. This moderately difficult walking route is 6.3 km long and passes the remains of Château de La Perrière and a replica of the Lourdes Grotto. For those who want to explore on foot, it is a route that connects two distinct sights.

Mountain bikers can take the easy Circuit VTT-FFC Étang-sur-Arroux: the 11.3 km route starts in Étang-sur-Arroux and runs along the Arroux. The Circuit Cyclo Étang-sur-Arroux also follows the river and starts in the town. This cycling route is 31.5 km long and rated difficult. The two cycling routes therefore differ both in length and in their stated level of difficulty. Published route conditions may change; check the details before setting out.

Another option is the GTMC Étang–Luzy–Étang mountain biking route. It starts in Étang-sur-Arroux and goes as far as Luzy; a bus journey is planned for the return trip. As transport arrangements may change, it is advisable to check the return journey in advance.

Architectural history and religious heritage

The Maison du passeur stands on the banks of the Arroux, near the bridge and the church. Built in 1636, it has retained its 17th-century architecture despite some alterations.

The ruins of Château de La Perrière reveal a square layout with four corner towers. This design suggests that it was built around the 13th century.

The Grotte de la Garenne is another religious landmark: it includes a Calvary, was inaugurated on 26 July 1936, and houses a replica of the Lourdes Grotto. The grotto and the replica, which the Tour de la butte passes, provide another historical and religious stop alongside the ruins and the Maison du passeur.

Wooden clogs and swimming

The Musée du Sabot displays wooden clogs from around the world, machines used to make them, and the world's largest wooden clog. The exhibits therefore cover a range of clogs, their manufacture and one particularly large example.

The Étang-sur-Arroux swimming pool offers different areas for water play and swimming, for both children and adults. As operating details may change, check them before planning a visit.
