Melay is in the Loire Valley, and the Canal de Roanne Ă  Digoin runs through the town. These geographical features frame a stay whose local history is reflected in tangible architectural and commemorative landmarks. There is also an annual exhibition and an area developed for leisure activities. These varied themes offer different starting points for deciding when to visit and what to focus on during your stay.

Wine-Growing History and Nativity Scene Exhibition

The Espace du Pressoir houses a monumental wine press dating from 1683. It comes from the outbuildings of the Château de Maulévrier and recalls Melay’s wine-growing past. As a wine press, it points to the processing of grapes; its provenance and date make its connection to local history tangible.

The “Melay, village des crèches” exhibition is held at the Espace du Pressoir every December and January. It is therefore a recurring seasonal cultural event. The exact programme may vary from year to year. If you are planning your trip around the exhibition, check the dates in advance.

Architectural History and Remembrance

The Church of Saint-Étienne in Melay retains Romanesque features and has a monumental mural from the 1980s. Different periods thus come together in one building: older architectural elements and a mural from more recent local history. Visitors interested in religious buildings and mural painting will find both here, although they do not belong to the same historical period.

A different period is commemorated by the Resistance memorial stele erected in Melay in 1990. It recalls the landing of a Lysander aircraft on the night of 19–20 March 1943. Jean Moulin, General Delestraint and Christian Pineau were brought to Melay during this landing. The years refer to two different events: 1943 is the date of the event being commemorated, while 1990 is when the stele was erected.

In Bagneaux, there is a 15th-century dovecote associated with former manor estates. Here, the focus is on a building connected with former estates—a different historical theme from the church, mural painting or commemoration.

Leisure and Weekly Planning

The Espace de loisirs de Melay is a former quarry that has been developed as a leisure area; it includes a pond for fishing. The site’s former use is thus combined with its present-day design. Local fishing regulations may vary. If fishing is important to your visit, check the conditions in advance.

A weekly market is held in Melay every Friday morning. This recurring weekly event can be taken into account when planning your stay. As the local schedule may change, check before your trip.
