Le Breuil can be explored through its culture and outdoor activities. The Église du Breuil, the unfinished château and archaeological finds offer different ways to discover the history of the area. Marked walking trails, cycling routes in Parc du Morambeau and Lac de Montaubry add opportunities for exercise by the water. During your stay, you can focus on architectural history, a walk or watersports.

Church architecture and local history

The Église du Breuil is one of the rural churches built in the second half of the 12th century and the beginning of the 13th century in the orbit of Burgundy and Franche-Comté’s major Cistercian abbeys. Its Bernardine floor plan is evident in the flat-ended chancel and the rib vaults. The small bell tower has twin windows and a stone spire. The floor plan, chancel and vaults describe the building’s design, while the details on the tower add a distinctive accent. These features give you several specific aspects to consider when looking at the church’s architecture.

The present-day château in Le Breuil was built in the 17th century and remains unfinished. Finds at Pointe des Bruyères offer a different historical focus: more than 300 Neolithic flints, flakes or tools were collected there. The château’s history, the church architecture and the Neolithic finds point to different periods. Those interested in local history will find more than one way in: a 17th-century building, a church from the orbit of medieval Cistercian abbeys and archaeological artefacts.

On foot and by bike

Les Sentiers du Breuil offers several marked walking trails where you can discover Le Breuil and its surroundings. Cyclists and mountain bikers are welcome on the paved paths in Parc du Morambeau that are open to bicycles. The options differ right from the choice of activity: you can follow a marked walking trail or focus on the paths in the park that are open to bicycles. This distinction is more specific for planning than a general description of outdoor activities.

Lac de Montaubry: circuit and watersports

Lac de Montaubry covers 128 hectares. A 15-kilometre trail runs around the lake, providing a clearly defined route for a walking excursion. As trail conditions can change, check them before setting out. There are also several shaded picnic tables by the lake. You can plan to use them for a break during your time by the water; the circuit and the tables are two distinct aspects of a visit.

The Ski Nautique Club Montaubry has offered waterskiing at Montaubry since the early 1960s, for families, leisure and competition training. By appointment, the club offers introductions to waterskiing and wakeboarding, as well as rides on towed inflatables. Equipment is provided for beginners. If you would like to take part in any of these activities, arrange a time with the club in advance and check its operating hours. This means that appointments and variable operating periods remain part of your planning.
