Montmelard offers different ways to explore history and landscape: specific dates help put its church and château history into context, while from Mont Saint-Cyr the view spans several landscapes. The GR7 passes through the town and links the Vosges with the Pyrenees. Local architectural history, a route through Montmelard and a named viewpoint thus offer different kinds of travel interest.

Church and château history

The former church of Montmelard was Romanesque and remained standing until 1870. The present church was built from 1871 to 1873. This makes it possible to distinguish the two phases chronologically: the former church remained until 1870, and construction of the present one began the following year. For those interested in cultural history, this sequence provides a tangible chronological reference.

The châteaux also reflect different periods: Château de Villars is associated with the 15th and 16th centuries, while Château de Vigousset was restored in 1887. Villars is dated broadly across two centuries; at Vigousset, the focus is on a precisely dated restoration. This distinction is useful when reading the history of the area: a date of origin and a restoration do not answer the same historical question.

The Moulin de Vigousset adds a mill to the list of named historical sites. Its origins are thought to date to the feudal period, and its history is connected with that of a neighbouring château. This brings together a cautiously stated period and a distinct historical connection.

Routes and landscape

The GR7 passes through Montmelard and links the Vosges with the Pyrenees. The route can therefore be understood both by its passage through the town and by its connection between the two mountain ranges. If you are interested in routes, this link offers a specific connection to Montmelard as well as a broad geographical context.

At 771 metres, Mont Saint-Cyr is the highest peak in southern Burgundy. From the summit, the view extends over Charolais, Brionnais and Clunisois. The elevation and the three named landscapes provide different points of reference: the peak’s position in southern Burgundy and the extent of the panorama described.

There is also a designated picnic area in the woods at Mont Saint-Cyr. Mont Saint-Cyr is open year-round and freely accessible; check the operating conditions before your visit. The summit panorama and picnic area appeal to different interests if you would like to spend time on the mountain.

Fishing at Étang de Millade

Étang de Millade is a private, 10-hectare fishing pond in Montmelard. Fishing is permitted there with a fishing permit. When planning a visit to the pond, take its private status and the fishing requirements into account. Check access and fishing permit conditions before travelling. The visiting conditions here differ from those at Mont Saint-Cyr, which is open year-round and freely accessible.
