A 120-metre-long, semicircular turning basin on the Canal du Centre brings Saint-Eusèbe’s canal heritage to life. There is also the history of Étang de Parisenot, two easy walking trails with different estimated times, and Étang Berthaud, where you can swim and fish. This gives you several ways to plan your visit: focus on waterway engineering, local sites of remembrance, walking, or activities on the water. Comparing the stated walking times can help you decide whether to make a hike a larger or smaller part of your stay.
Canal heritage: waterway engineering and goods transport
The Bassin de la Grue is a 120-metre-long, semicircular turning basin on the Canal du Centre. It was already in existence at the beginning of the 19th century. Its length and shape give the structure a distinctive profile; as a turning basin, it is also part of the canal’s technical infrastructure. Étang de Parisenot shows a different relationship with water: a dam separates it from the Canal du Centre, and a lock feeds water from it into the canal. Historically, the former pond served as a port for wines from the Côte Chalonnaise, which arrived via the road from Montchanin. Water supply and wine transport represent two distinct functions connecting this place with the history of the canal. At the lock site of La Favée on the Canal du Centre, the complex includes a lock chamber. The isolated road bridge at Parisenot was built in 1789–1790. The turning basin, lock and bridge bring different aspects of infrastructure history into view through tangible structures.
Comparing two walking trails
Two easy trails with clearly different distances and walking times are available. La Vieille Bourgade (SEU1) is 5.6 km long and takes 1 hour 20 minutes to walk. Saint-Eusèbe au fil de l'eau (SEU2) is 7.3 km long and has a stated walking time of 1 hour 50 minutes. The second trail is therefore 1.7 km longer, with a stated walking time 30 minutes greater. When planning your day, SEU1 offers the shorter time commitment, while SEU2 covers the longer distance. Both trails are rated easy, making their estimated times particularly straightforward to compare.
At Étang Berthaud: fishing and swimming
Étang Berthaud covers 50 hectares and is listed in the 2024 tourist guide among the lakes and ponds in the Creusot Montceau area that appeal to anglers. Check local fishing rules before planning a fishing trip. There is also a beach at the pond for unsupervised swimming. As swimming conditions can vary by season, check the current conditions before swimming. The same body of water offers different activities, each with its own considerations for your visit.
A place of remembrance and other activities
The history of the Second World War is also commemorated at a named site: the demarcation line memorial in Saint-Eusèbe features engraved posts at the locations of former German checkpoints. Information panels at the memorial explain the local history. The posts and panels offer two different points of reference for visitors: the marked locations and the explanations accompanying them. The Centre équestre Le Chêne Vert offers riding lessons, rides, and courses with horses and ponies. Flights with Ptiote Vadrouille last between 45 minutes and 1 hour 15 minutes; weather and landing conditions affect their duration. Ptiote Vadrouille offers flights with 360-degree views of the countryside and forests, as well as rivers and castles.
