La Grande-Verrière is surrounded by the state forest landscape of Glenne and the Méchet Valley. It also has Roman archaeological traces, castle ruins and trails with clearly identified landmarks. This makes it easy to tailor your stay to different interests: take a hike on the Circuit du Château, explore local history or enjoy a seasonal visit to the Château de Vautheau. When planning, the main consideration is which of these experiences you want to focus on.

Forest Landscape and Trails

The Circuit du Château is a moderately difficult 10.6-kilometre hiking trail. It starts and ends at Place de la Mairie in La Grande-Verrière and follows the Méchet, a trout stream. Its length, difficulty level and start and end points provide a clear framework for the hike. Check current trail conditions before setting out, as they can change.

The Circuit du Château also passes the access road to the Château de Savilly. Access to the private estate may be restricted, so the route that passes by it does not automatically include a visit to the château. The Circuit du Grand Vernay follows a different route: it runs for 1.7 kilometres towards Château Boutton. While the Circuit du Château is defined by its route along the Méchet and its start and end point at Place de la Mairie, the Grand Vernay points towards a different named destination.

Roman Traces and Castle Ruins

La Grande-Verrière lay on the historic road between Bibracte and Augustodunum (Autun). Fragments of a Roman mosaic were found in the hamlet of Buisson. The road and the find offer two different ways to explore the area's history: one is a historic link between named places, the other a specific archaeological find in a hamlet. The remains of the Château fort des Roches de Glenne were part of one of the Morvan's most important châtellenies. Together with the mosaic and historic road, the castle ruins offer another cultural highlight alongside the trails through the landscape.

Visits and Summer Programme

Individual visits to the Château de Vautheau are possible by reservation on the first Saturday of each month from May to August. If you plan to visit, make a reservation as part of your preparations, and check the current schedule before travelling. Every summer, the château also hosts concerts, drawing classes, hikes, Heritage Days and private visits. The individual visit and the summer programme offer different ways to explore: a reservation is required for the first-Saturday visit, while events should be planned around the current calendar.

On Foot or by Mountain Bike

The Anost–La Grande-Verrière stage of the Grande Traversée du Massif Central à VTT may also be of interest when planning your trip. Its final section descends pleasantly into La Grande-Verrière and offers beautiful open views to the west. This gives you a different perspective from hiking the Circuit du Château: the stage focuses on mountain biking, the descent and westward views, while the Circuit is a moderately difficult route along the Méchet that starts and ends at Place de la Mairie. You can choose your activities based on your preferred way of getting around and the features described for each route.
