Mont offers three different ways to experience the area: the sweeping views from the Signal de Mont, the miniature farms in the “Le monde paysan de Gilbert Mulot” exhibition, and seasonal activities at Domaine de Chantôt. This gives you a chance to consider in advance whether you want to focus on the landscape, farming models, or a visit to a farm during your stay. The attractions have different visiting arrangements: the Signal grounds are open year-round, while the exhibition and the Domaine each require an appointment or are subject to specific visiting hours.
Panoramic Views and Historical Traces at the Signal de Mont
The 12-metre-high observation tower at the Signal de Mont offers a 360-degree panorama over the Bourbonnais, the Nivernais, the Charolais and Forez hills, the Morvan massif, and Mont Beuvray. The Signal de Mont itself stands at an elevation of 472 metres. The figures therefore refer to two different points: 12 metres is the height of the tower, while 472 metres is the elevation of the Signal. The panoramic view takes in several named landscapes and is the defining landscape feature of this visitor site.
The remains of an anti-aircraft post from the Second World War can be seen at the foot of the Signal de Mont. Alongside the expansive views, there is also a historical trace that adds a second theme to a visit. The Signal de Mont grounds are open year-round. Seasonal conditions may affect practical access; check the conditions before your visit. Picnic tables are available at the Signal de Mont car park.
Agriculture on a Scale of 1:32
The “Le monde paysan de Gilbert Mulot” exhibition in Mont features four farms at a scale of 1:32. At a scale of 1:32, one unit on the model corresponds to 32 units on the real-life farm. Using the same scale makes it possible to compare the farms; more than 300 hand-carved wooden figures and animals add to the models. There is also farm equipment made of iron, modelled on examples from different periods. The exhibition thus brings together two kinds of detail: the farms as scale models, and the individual figures, animals, and pieces of equipment as additional elements. Unlike the panoramic view at the Signal, the exhibition focuses on individual farms and their equipment. A guided visit is available year-round by prior telephone appointment.
Farm Activities and Seasonal Produce
At Domaine de ChantĂ´t, families can enjoy seasonal activities: milking goats, collecting eggs, and petting rabbits. Visits are available by appointment or on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 2 to 6 pm. The Domaine also offers pony rides. Farm produce can be purchased directly, too. The produce from the permaculture vegetable garden varies with the seasons; direct sales are subject to availability.
