In the Rokycany District, a range of discoveries leads from fossils and iron production to the open landscapes of the Brdy. In Rokycany, you can explore natural history in a museum; in Dobřív, a technical monument recalls iron production. Outdoors, viewpoints, nature trails and protected landscapes alternate. You can shape your trip around the subjects that interest you most.

Museums and technical history

A description of the Dr. Bohuslav Horák Museum in Rokycany, updated on 25 February 2025, identifies history, ethnography, palaeontology and natural sciences as its main areas of focus. The visitor route presented there includes six permanent exhibitions; the museum also organises temporary exhibitions and lectures. The museum is home to a Centre for Palaeobiodiversity with significant fossils from the Lower and Upper Palaeozoic. The themes thus connect human history and culture with a view of life in the distant past.

You can encounter another chapter of regional history in Dobřív: its water-powered hammer mill is a Czech National Cultural Monument. An accompanying exhibition focuses on the history of iron production in Dobřív and was created as part of the 2020 revitalisation. The technical monument and exhibition offer a specific focus if you are interested in how iron production shaped the history of a place.

Individual life stories also give cultural sites their own character. Alfons Mucha lived for 18 years at Zbiroh Castle and created the Slav Epic there. The castle also presents experiences related to the history of the Knights Templar and the house’s hidden stories. A rope park has obstacles at heights of two to nine metres; check current operating conditions before your trip. The Jindřich Mošna Memorial features an exhibition dedicated to his life and work.

The Brdy: Nature trails and landscapes

The Brdy offer several ways to explore nature and history together. The Dům přírody Brd near Tři Trubky presents an exhibition about the Brdy Mountains, their history and legends, and their rare inhabitants. The programme and opening conditions may change; check current visitor information before your trip.

You can start the nature trail at the Padrť ponds at various points and walk it in any order. Its information panels focus primarily on the natural features of the area. At the same time, the landscape bears the marks of its former inhabitants: the area’s vanished villages include Padrť, Přední and Zadní Záběhlá, and Kolvín. Check current trail conditions before setting out. In the Padrť area, the Brdy are characterised by extensive open landscapes; around the Dolejší Padrť pond lie marshes and species-rich wet meadows.

Strašice is the usual starting point for a walk to Lipovsko. The car park in Strašice also provides access to Lipovsko, Tři Trubky and the central Brdy area; Rokycany is also listed as an approach route. Another starting point is the car park in Skořice: from there, routes lead to the Padrť ponds and into the central Brdy area. The car park has toilets and an e-bike charging point; check current conditions before your journey.

There are no places to buy food or other services within the Brdy Protected Landscape Area. So bring food and drinks with you. Camping is prohibited throughout the protected area, but bivouacking is permitted. Check the rules in force before your trip.

Views and discoveries in Rokycany

The Kotel viewpoint near Rokycany offers views towards the Brdy, Šumava, Český les, Krušné hory and České středohoří. From Rokycany railway station, you can reach it via the blue-marked hiking trail. The viewpoint is free to visit and open year-round; check in advance for possible temporary closures or trail restrictions. The named mountain ranges give the view a broad perspective, while the hiking trail provides a clear starting point.

U Plzeňské brány Park is right next to Rokycany railway and bus station. Its features include a labyrinth-shaped bench and a fountain; in hot weather, there is also a water play area for children. The park offers an urban contrast to the hiking and nature experiences in the Brdy.

The Křivoklátsko Protected Landscape Area also extends into the former Rokycany District. In Křivoklátsko, 62 percent of the area is forested, mainly with deciduous and mixed woodland. This figure refers to Křivoklátsko, not to the entire Rokycany District. Together with the open landscapes of the Brdy, it shows how varied the region’s natural areas are.
