Podmokly is part of the Křivoklátsko Protected Landscape Area and offers a variety of ways to enjoy a stay: historical themes relating to the castle, monuments and a coin hoard, as well as opportunities for exercise on a marked hiking trail or at the multi-purpose sports field. The individual dates refer to different points in time.
Local History and the Coin Hoard
Podmokly was first mentioned in historical records in 1045. The present-day Podmokly Castle was built in 1707 by Count Karel Michna of Vacínov. The two dates mark different milestones: 1045 is the first historical mention of the town, while 1707 is the specific year the castle was built. This distinction provides a chronological context without equating the early mention of the town with the age of the present-day castle.
By July 30, 1771, the Podmokelský hoard comprised a total of 4,211 Celtic gold coins weighing 28 kilograms. The date, number of coins and weight give this topic a different character from the history of the town and its buildings: alongside the questions of when Podmokly was first mentioned and when the castle was built, there is also a coin hoard quantified in precise terms.
Baroque Works and Monuments
The Calvary ensemble is a significant Baroque sandstone work from the 18th century. It stands northeast of Podmokly, on the road to Hradiště. Its date differs from that of the castle: the castle was built in 1707, while the Calvary ensemble dates to the 18th century. Thus, a specific construction year and a date given by century are presented side by side.
The monument to František Froňek and the heroes of the anti-fascist resistance was unveiled on May 22, 1975. Podmokly’s list of monuments also includes a statue of Saint John of Nepomuk and a statue of the Immaculate Virgin Mary. These religious depictions add to the historical buildings and memorial sites. Visitors interested in culture will find several distinct topics alongside the castle’s history.
Hiking and Sports
The blue-marked hiking trail through the valley of the Zbirožský potok is called Cesta protifašistických bojovníků (Path of the Anti-Fascist Fighters). It offers a different perspective from the history of buildings and monuments, with the focus here on a hiking route through a valley.
The multi-purpose sports field in Podmokly is intended for active recreation by the general public of all ages, particularly young people. Visitors can play tennis, small-sided football, volleyball, nohejbal and basketball there. This gives you a choice of both a marked hiking trail and a venue offering several specific sports when planning active leisure time. Check the sports field’s current availability and booking conditions before using it.
Event and Accommodation Search
The traditional Czech May celebrations known as Staročeské máje returned to Podmokly in 2023 after a three-year break. This event from the town’s more recent history complements its longer-standing architectural and monument-related themes.
When looking for a holiday rental for a stay in Podmokly, you can use the purpose of your trip to help you choose. For a culture-focused stay, local history, the castle and monuments take centre stage; if you would like to include some exercise, the valley hiking trail and the sports available at the multi-purpose field are additional options.
