Hlohovice brings together several cultural and historical themes: the Church of the Holy Trinity, the Starý zámek fortress, the Nový zámek complex and memorial sites such as Doubí. For a stay focused on culture, these points of interest differ in architectural form, period and function. They encompass sacred architecture, various castle and fortress histories, and memorial culture, although the buildings do not all date from the same period.

Starý zámek and Nový zámek: Different Building Histories

The Starý zámek fortress was first mentioned in 1519. This date marks its first mention, not the year it was built. The fortress features Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque elements. It is a masonry building consisting of two wings arranged at right angles to one another, each with its own roof. This gives two perspectives for understanding it: its different architectural elements and the specific layout of the building. The first mention and the architectural description are distinct aspects of the building’s history.

Nový zámek has a different building history. Work began at the end of the 18th century; construction remained unfinished, and the complex was modified in the first half of the 19th century. The fully enclosed complex consists of a castle building and outbuildings, which together form a rectangular courtyard. Nový zámek is designated an immovable cultural monument. Its beginnings, later modifications and unfinished state are all part of its building history, while the courtyard and the buildings enclosing it define the form of the complex.

Church of the Holy Trinity: Construction Period and Orientation

The Church of the Holy Trinity was built on the western edge of Hlohovice between 1727 and 1734, based on a design by Baroque architect František Ignác Prée. Its orientation is also clearly specified: the presbytery faces west and the façade faces east. The construction period, architectural design and orientation offer different ways to understand the church building. Unlike the Starý zámek fortress, which features Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque elements, the church is notable for its clearly defined construction period. Visitors with a particular interest in sacred architecture will find a distinct focus here, alongside the history of the castle complexes.

Memorial Sites in Hlohovice and DoubĂ

The local history also includes individual monuments and memorial sites. At the Doubí memorial site stands a burial mound with a stone cross at its centre, erected in 1847. Doubí is on the route from Svinná towards Kamenec, on the right-hand side. A statue of Saint John of Nepomuk dating from 1766 also stands in front of the school building in Hlohovice. The two dates mark different historical reference points; the sites also differ in form: one is a memorial site with a burial mound and cross, the other a statue in front of the school building.
