Skomelno combines a five-kilometre walking loop with an ancient oak, countryside and traces of the village’s history. The Putování s Dubíky nature trail starts and ends in Skomelno; its themes range from Radeč and Mitterwald to the Radnická seam. This gives your planning a clear focus between nature and local history.

The circular nature trail and the Skomelský Oak

Putování s Dubíky is a five-kilometre circular nature trail that starts and ends in Skomelno. It covers Radeč, Mitterwald and the Radnická seam, and leads to the Skomelský Oak. The loop thus combines its length with several named themes. If you are looking for a walk with a local focus on nature and landscape, the trail offers a specific starting point.

The Skomelský Oak is over 600 years old and stands at the edge of the forest near Skomelno. The oak came second in the 2014 Tree of the Year vote. The nature trail leads to it, making this natural attraction part of the loop. Anyone interested in ancient trees will find a specific point of interest here alongside the trail’s other themes.

The route is partially marked and is not maintained by KČT. As trail conditions may change, check them before setting out.

Landscape and another nearby destination

Skomelno lies at the foot of the forested Zbirožské Mountains, north of Mount Radeč. Radeč Nature Park is near Skomelno, and the Skomelák pond is also close to the village. These landscape features add other named points of reference in the area to the nature trail. You can choose the themed trail and the landscape features mentioned as different focuses for your exploration.

The Věž u Skomelna is located near Skomelno. The approach starts at Skomelno’s football pitch and follows a forest path towards Lhota pod Radčem. The rock is eight metres high, is made of rhyolite and has fixed protection. This makes it different from the circular nature trail: here, the rock and the described approach take centre stage. If you are interested in climbing, the Věž offers another point of interest.

A historical overview of the village

Skomelno was first mentioned in written records in 1379. From that same year, Otík ze Skomelna is named as a resident of the village. In 1631, Skomelno passed into the possession of Petr Příchovský z Příchovic. These dates mark different stages in the village’s history: its first written mention, a named resident and a later change of ownership.

A monument to the victims of the First World War stands at a bend in the centre of Skomelno. The northern arm of a water-filled moat remains from the former fortification. Alongside the historical dates, you can therefore find specific points of interest in the village: the monument and the surviving section of the moat.
