Sebečice combines local history with an observation tower and a geological natural monument. This offers different ways to explore the village and the Biskoupky part of the municipality: historical traces, a tower with a viewing platform and a fossil site from the Middle Cambrian.

Local History and Historical Traces

The first written mention of Sebečice dates back to 1359. Biskoupky, part of the municipality of Sebečice, was first mentioned in written records in 1445. These two dates give the localities their own historical reference points, without reducing their history to a single shared point in time.

The history of Biskoupky includes the fortress, which was already uninhabited when it was sold in 1573. Remains of the complex are located in farmyard No. 1. This links a specific place with a clear historical turning point: by then, the fortress was no longer inhabited.

In the centre of Sebečice, the Chapel of Saint Margaret stands beside a pond on the village square. Another building with a history of its own is the former school. It was converted into a multi-purpose building with a grocery store and restaurant. This adaptive reuse adds a glimpse into the development of a local building to the area’s historic landmarks.

Observation Tower and Hiking Opportunities

The Biskoupky u Sebečic observation tower is a metal tower with a viewing platform for visitors. It was built in 2019 and stands on the western edge of the Biskoupky settlement, below Bašovka Hill. The tower is freely accessible year-round; visitors climb it at their own risk. This explicit notice is an important part of planning a visit.

A circular hike starts in Sebečice and initially follows the blue trail to Chotětín. From there, it follows the red trail to the U Zámečku junction, then the green trail past the vanished settlement of Rovný to the Pod Babskou skálou junction. The final section follows the blue trail again, passes the abandoned castle site on Babská skála Hill and leads back to Sebečice. As trail conditions can change, it is advisable to check the current route before setting out.

A section of almost seven kilometres is also described in the area for climbing to the Babská skála viewpoint. It begins at the holiday cottage area below Drahoňův Újezd and includes a short descent in Sebečice. The circular hike starts in Sebečice, while the almost seven-kilometre section begins at the holiday cottage area below Drahoňův Újezd.

The Biskoupky Natural Monument

The Biskoupky Natural Monument is located in the cadastral area of Biskoupky, in the municipality of Sebečice. It is a classic fossil site from the Middle Cambrian. Its geological features include exposures of fossil-bearing sediments from the Skryje-Týřovice Cambrian. This adds a perspective on the history of the Earth to Biskoupky’s local buildings and fortress remains.

Local and Regional Highlights

A New Year’s hiking event took place on 1 January 2023, following a route from Biskoupky via Sebečice to Bašovka and ending with light refreshments. It also shows that hiking has featured in local history as a community event.

In the wider region around Sebečice, on the edge of the Křivoklátsko area, the Alp Rieser family farm offers encounters with alpacas and other animals, goat milking, and courses in spinning on a spinning wheel and felting wool. Confirm that these activities are available before you arrive. This adds a regional offering to the local focus on history, views and geology without presenting it as an excursion within Sebečice itself.
