Klabava can be explored through the Klabava Reservoir and the history of iron ore. Here, recreation and water management sit alongside traces of mining, the ruins of a medieval watchtower, and the history of an amateur theatre group. The town thus brings together a range of themes rather than focusing on just one attraction. Landscape, technology, and culture can each provide a different focus for your trip.

The Reservoir: Recreation and Water Management

Today, the Klabava Reservoir is used primarily for recreation, maintaining minimum flow, and flood protection. Conditions for recreation may vary by season, so take this into account when planning activities by the water. The reservoir was built in 1957 to protect the iron ore mine in Ejpovice from flooding. The dam is 403.6 metres long and 12.6 metres high. The same structure thus brings together present-day uses and a clearly defined original purpose: protecting the mine shaped its construction, while today the reservoir serves both recreational and water-management functions. To put it in context, it is worth considering both its construction history and its current functions.

Mining and Technical Structures

The St. Anthony of Padua adit near Klabava was created in 1670 and became the main source of iron ore for the Klabava ironworks. The adit thus represents the economic link between ore mining and the ironworks. Starý zámek illustrates a different role in the area’s mining history. The ruins of a medieval watchtower near Klabava railway station were used to monitor work in the local mines. The adit is associated with iron ore extraction, while Starý zámek is associated with overseeing mining operations. This comparison brings the different roles within the history of mining into focus.

The Ejpovice water tunnels add another dimension to the story: water engineering. They were completed in 1958 and are 1,500 metres long. One of the tunnels was later used to supply water to a hydroelectric power station. The dates place these technical structures in chronological context: the 1670 adit was followed by the reservoir in 1957 and the tunnels completed in 1958. The story thus spans everything from iron ore extraction to structures that use water for different purposes.

Culture and Nature

The “Mošna” amateur theatre group was active in Klabava from 1898 to 1964 and performed in many places across the district. Its performances show that its history was not confined to a single venue; the dates 1898 and 1964 also set a clear timeframe.

The 2021 municipal coordination map identifies Pod Starým hradem as a natural monument. This adds a natural attraction to Klabava’s cultural and technical highlights.
