Nature, architecture and local history offer different reasons to visit Hůrky. In winter, cross-country skiing is another option, but only when there is enough snow. If you are looking for a hotel in Hůrky, first consider whether you would rather plan your dates around a winter activity or around the area’s enduring landscape and history.
Trhoň Nature Park and the Hůrecký potok
Hůrky is part of Trhoň Nature Park. The park was established in 1979 and covers approximately 45 km². Its purpose is to protect the character of the landscape, as well as concentrated aesthetic and natural values. The park’s area gives a rough idea of its size; its conservation purpose helps explain the significance of the landscape and nature for this designation.
One named feature of the area is the Hůrecký potok. It is the only significant watercourse in the Hůrky area. Its source lies in the woods about 2 km east of Hůrky; as a left-bank tributary, it belongs to the Holoubkovský potok river system. The source and its relationship as a tributary describe two different aspects of the stream: where it originates locally and how it connects to another watercourse.
The valley along the Hůrecký potok below Žďár is a habitat for the stone crayfish. The species, Austropotamobius torrentium, is nationally significant and specially protected. At 627 m, Žďár is also one of the peaks around Hůrky. The stream, valley and peak thus point to specific landscape features, while the nature park provides the broader context.
Chapel and local history
The chapel in Hůrky is an architecturally significant building. The area around the chapel is also considered an important element of urban design.
Records of the village reach far back: in 1379, Hůrky appears as “villa Horka” in the Rožmberk Urbar, where it is listed as part of the Strašice estate. Another glimpse of its history comes from the Theresian Cadastre. For the second half of the 18th century, it lists nine farmsteads and a blacksmith in Hůrky. These records come from different periods and types of historical documentation: the urbar entry establishes the name and its connection to the estate, while the later cadastre lists farmsteads and a trade. Together, they offer specific points of reference for the village’s history, but should not be read as a description of its present-day buildings.
Winter planning and travel
When there is enough snow, several cross-country ski trails are available in Hůrky and the surrounding area in winter. Snow cover is therefore a prerequisite for this activity and should be considered when choosing your travel dates. Do not assume that cross-country skiing will be possible on a particular date; check current conditions before a winter trip.
Hůrky has two bus stops. If you are considering travelling by bus, include the current timetable in your plans. This will help you choose travel dates based on the things that matter most for your stay.
