A porcelain-making tradition dating back to the 18th century, a nature reserve with more than 2,600 animal and plant species, and a contemporary art museum offer very different ways to explore Haute-Vienne. Add mountain panoramas, waterscapes and places of remembrance. You can focus on wildlife observation, cultural history or activities by the water. Visitor destinations in the département include Mont Gargan, Lac de Saint-Pardoux, Châlucet-Ligoure, Forêt des Vaseix, the Musée d’art contemporain at Château de Rochechouart, the Centre de la mémoire d’Oradour-sur-Glane, the Tourbière des Dauges and the Étang de la Pouge.

Panoramas and distinctive habitats

At 731 metres, Mont Gargan offers panoramic views across the Plateau de Millevaches, the Massif des Monédières and the Auvergne mountains. The mountain lies within the Parc naturel régional de Millevaches en Limousin. The view takes in several different landscapes, while the Tourbière des Dauges draws attention to the diversity of a single protected area. This national nature reserve is home to more than 2,600 animal and plant species, including 127 species protected in France. Two trails, 2 and 5 kilometres long, let you choose how far you want to walk.

At the Étang de la Pouge, too, wildlife observation is paired with a specific waterside location: the pond covers 28 hectares and has an ornithological observatory. Fishing platforms are accessible in the downstream area. This gives you different ways to enjoy a visit to the same body of water. Forêt des Vaseix adds woodland to these waters and wetlands: coniferous and deciduous trees grow across 104 hectares. The forest also preserves traces of a Roman road that linked Lyon with the Atlantic coast.

History, art and remembrance

At Châlucet-Ligoure, a historical discovery comes with a circular trail: a 7-kilometre route around the Ligoure estate passes ten information points. The Châlucet-Ligoure site is open year-round for free, independent visits. You can also explore Châlucet with a puzzle game and augmented reality. The trail, information points and digital features offer different ways to discover the site, so you need not limit yourself to a single way of exploring it.

The Musée d’art contemporain de la Haute-Vienne at Château de Rochechouart brings together architecture and heritage with contemporary art. The collection includes site-specific works both indoors and outdoors. This also makes a visit to the museum appealing to travellers interested in how art relates to a particular building and its surroundings. Oradour-sur-Glane offers another perspective on history: its ruins preserve traces of the massacre of the population on 10 June 1944. The Centre de la mémoire d’Oradour is the only access point to the ruins and offers guided visits.

Haute-Vienne’s porcelain-making tradition dates back to the 18th century, adding regional cultural history to visits to the museum, château and place of remembrance. Along with the traces of the Roman road in Forêt des Vaseix, it shows how differently history can be encountered in the landscape and at cultural sites.

Activities at the lake and along the route

Activities at Lac de Saint-Pardoux are spread across two areas: Santrop has a swimming pool and accrobranche; at Chabannes, you’ll find water activities, mountain bike hire and archery. This lets you choose between the pool and accrobranche on the one hand, and water activities, bike hire or archery on the other.

If you’d like to explore Haute-Vienne on foot or by bike, the Voie verte des Hauts de Tardoire follows a former railway line. It is an easy, comfortable route for walking and cycling. The Voie verte connects with the Route Richard Cœur de Lion; you can reach it from the Vélidéale by following part of this route. So, alongside the individual natural and cultural sites, the département’s routes offer another focus for discovery.
