The Étang de Moustiers and the dovecote at the Château de la Tour aux Paulmes introduce two different aspects of Verneuil-Moustiers: a Natura 2000 protected area with a specific connection to wildlife, and a building with a precisely described interior layout. The parish church of Saint-Marc also houses two images of the Virgin Mary, as well as an altar whose history stretches from antiquity to a later use. If you are looking for a holiday rental, you can first consider whether you are more interested in nature, architectural history or sacred art.

Pond and protected area

The Étang de Moustiers is part of the Natura 2000 site “Étangs du nord de la Haute-Vienne”. The site is a 172-hectare Special Area of Conservation. The pond is considered a particularly favourable habitat for the European pond turtle. Thus, both the body of water and its place within the protected area, as well as a specific animal species, are part of the nature theme. The area figure refers to the protected site as a whole. If nature conservation and wildlife influence your choice of destination, this connection offers a clear point of reference: a named pond within a named site, and a habitat for the European pond turtle.

Dovecote with a distinctive interior structure

The dovecote stands at the Château de la Tour aux Paulmes. As part of the historic monument, it is partially protected; the dovecote itself is fully protected. Its nesting niches are a striking architectural feature: 533 niches are stacked on top of one another. Their regular arrangement comprises six rows below and six rows above the flight opening. For those interested in architecture, this offers a different way into the building’s history than simply giving a date: the focus here is on the structure, number and arrangement of the niches.

Images of the Virgin Mary and the altar of Moustiers

The parish church of Saint-Marc contains two images of the Virgin Mary from different centuries. The locally made statue of the Virgin and Child dates from the 16th century and is associated with a cult that is still active. Beside it stands the 19th-century statue “Vierge à l'Enfant dite Notre-Dame des Victoires”; its polychrome finish is more recent. The two images therefore differ both in date and in the features emphasised: the older statue is noted for its local craftsmanship and connection with the cult, while the more recent one is distinguished by its later painted finish.

The pagan altar of Moustiers dates from the 2nd or 3rd century. For a long time, it has served as a support for the cross from the former cemetery. The altar consists of a rectangular granite block with a top section; all four sides are decorated with bas-reliefs. This brings together the object’s ancient date, its later use and its relief decoration. Unlike the dovecote, the focus here is not on the arrangement of niches, but on a carved block of stone with a long history of use.

Domaine du Fan and directions

Domaine du Fan is a retreat and event venue in a château on a 170-hectare estate at 87360 Verneuil-Moustiers. Participation depends on the offering in question. To get there by car, take the A20 to Saint-Sulpice-les-Feuilles. From there, follow the signs to Lussac-les-Églises and then take the D912; the Domaine is five minutes from the D912. This offering differs from the cultural heritage and nature topics described above: it depends on the programme in question. When choosing your accommodation, you can therefore first consider whether the protected-area setting, the historic sites or a stay linked to a specific offering is the deciding factor for you.
