Azat-Le-Ris brings together a range of travel interests: the fortified Église Saint-Genest, the Château du Puy Mesnil, a nature trail and an award-winning cycling circuit. There is also a farm shop selling apples and apple juice. This gives you several different options to plan around: architectural history, a long hike, cycling or local produce.
Église Saint-Genest: architectural features and heritage status
The Église Saint-Genest dates from the 12th century, is fortified and remains visible today. It has been listed as a historic monument since 6 February 1926. Its architectural features include an échauguette, modillions on the west façade and an octagonal bell tower with a spire roofed in chestnut shingles. The building’s age and its listing refer to different points in time: one indicates when it was built, while the other indicates its heritage status. The fortifications shape its overall character, while the façade and bell tower add specific architectural details.
Château du Puy Mesnil: a different period
The Château du Puy Mesnil is part of Azat-Le-Ris’s notable and protected built and cultural heritage, and dates from the 15th and 19th centuries. It therefore stands alongside a building from a different period, the 12th-century Église Saint-Genest. Together, the two buildings give the local heritage different points of reference in time, rather than reducing it to a single period of construction.
Hiking and cycling
For a long hike, the Randonnée des vieux chênes offers specific guidance on time and distance: the circular route is 28 km long and has an alternative, and you should allow more than six hours for the hike. In Azat-Le-Ris, it is designated as a nature trail for hiking and mountain biking. It returns to the starting point beside a fishing pond, and Puygrenet is one of the villages it highlights. The more-than-six-hour estimate applies to the hike; it is a substantial block of time to include in your day’s plans. The alternative also gives you another route option.
The C4-Circuit cyclo autour de Magnac-Laval et Le Dorat passes through Azat-Le-Ris and has been awarded by the Fédération Française de Cyclisme. This provides a dedicated cycling circuit in addition to the nature trail. You can initially choose between the two routes according to the activity you want: the Randonnée is designated for hiking and mountain biking, while the C4 offers an award-winning cycling circuit through the commune. For the hike, the distance and time required are specified; for the C4, its award and route through Azat-Le-Ris are the main points of reference.
Farm-grown apples and apple juice
Local produce offers another point of interest. In Azat-Le-Ris, GAEC de la Cheveche sells apples grown in its own orchards, as well as apple juice, directly from the farm. This adds a specific agricultural connection to the buildings and activities. If you plan to visit the farm shop, check in advance which sales period applies to your visit.
