On Lac de Vassivière, Pierrefitte offers several distinct starting points for planning your trip: Plage de Pierrefitte on a strip of land that extends into the water, a public marina and a protected peninsula. There is also contemporary art on Île de Vassivière, group activities on the water and a mountain biking route. Which conditions matter for your visit depends on the activity you choose.

Beach, peninsula and marina

Plage de Pierrefitte is located on a strip of land that extends into the lake. There is a snack bar at the beach; its offerings are seasonal and may change. If you want to plan your meals around this stop, check what is available during your visit.

Presqu’île de Pierrefitte has been listed as a protected site since 10 January 1964. The mountain biking route “Lac de Vassivière – Grand tour par les tourbières” also starts on this peninsula, bringing together landscape conservation and a specific starting point for a bike ride.

Pierrefitte is one of six public marinas on Lac de Vassivière. If you plan to use the marina, check the applicable services and access rules before your visit, as these may change.

Art on Île de Vassivière

The Centre International d’Art et du Paysage on Île de Vassivière is an institution dedicated to contemporary art. Since 2018, it has held the French Ministry of Culture’s “Centre of National Interest” designation. The island is for pedestrians and can be reached in three ways: via a footbridge, on foot in about 20 minutes, or by shuttle boat during the season. Since the shuttle boats operate seasonally, check their availability if you want to use this option during your visit.

For planning purposes, a visit to the island is a cultural experience in its own right, alongside the beach and activities on the lake. The listed ways of getting there differ in how you travel, and shuttle boats operate only during the season.

Activities on the water and by bike

Pierrefitte is one place where you can launch a boat for fishing on Lac de Vassivière. Conditions may change depending on the state of the lake and local regulations. Check these details in advance if you plan to use a boat.

There is also a specific water sports option for groups: Ski Club Vassivière can host groups for water skiing or rides on inflatable tubes. This offers a different kind of activity from fishing. If you are planning a group outing, contact the club.

If you prefer mountain biking, the “Lac de Vassivière – Grand tour par les tourbières” route starts on Presqu’île de Pierrefitte. The GPS track for the route dates from 23 July 2021, so check trail conditions before setting out. This distinguishes the stated starting point from the question of whether the route is currently rideable.

A cultural site in the host village

The host village of Beaumont-du-Lac has a Romanesque church. It complements the contemporary art on Île de Vassivière with a different cultural experience. Visitors choosing Pierrefitte as a destination can therefore choose between art, the lakeshore and activities, while keeping in mind that different conditions apply to individual offerings.
