Anyone planning a stay with hiking and culture in mind will find plenty to explore in Berneuil: trails along the Vincou, dolmens, a stone bridge and heathland with a pond. Two questions can help you choose: how far and how long do you want to hike, and are you more interested in landscapes or historical sites? Three hiking trails in Berneuil are listed in the departmental plan of walking and hiking routes (PDIPR).

Hiking trails for different timeframes

The Chemin de la vallée du Vincou is twelve kilometres long and takes an estimated three hours. It is marked in yellow, rated moderate and has an elevation gain of 75 metres. The distance and duration provide a practical framework; trail markings, difficulty level and elevation profile help with further planning. Check trail conditions before setting out. The route also passes the Dolmen de La Borderie. A much shorter option is the 1.1-kilometre out-and-back route along the Vincou. It leads to a surprising rock formation in the Gourre de Silhem river. This makes it easy to compare the longer trail with the short riverside option based on their stated distances.

Dolmens and traces of history

The Dolmen de La Borderie is a Neolithic archaeological site and is classified as a historic monument. A decree dated 5 July 1983 protects it. Its location on the Chemin de la vallée du Vincou connects a hike with a tangible link to prehistoric heritage. Another trail passes a second dolmen: the Chemin du moulin du Pont passes the Dolmen de la Betoulle, which lies in a meadow. On the same route, the trail crosses the Vincou over a stone bridge. Alongside the dolmen, this gives the route a distinctive connection to the river. The Moulin du Pont dates from the 17th to the 19th century, placing different historical periods side by side in Berneuil.

Heathland and a pond

The Chemin de la Galache à Lassalle passes through heathland with heather and reaches the Étang de la Haute Pradelle. By comparison, the Vincou routes described here focus on the river, a stone bridge or a rock formation. The routes therefore differ not only in their features, but also in the landscape and cultural points of interest that can guide your choice. If you prefer heather and a pond as themes for your walk, you will find both on the Galache route. The Vincou option, by contrast, follows the river to a rock formation; the Chemin du moulin du Pont combines a river crossing with the Dolmen de la Betoulle.

Getting to the Chemin du moulin du Pont

From Limoges, take the A20 towards Paris to exit 28 towards Poitiers, then continue on the RN520 and the RN147, also towards Poitiers. The trailhead is at square du général Navelet, heading towards Place de la Poste. These directions apply to the Chemin du moulin du Pont and provide a practical starting point for planning your journey. Before setting out, check trail conditions as well as road conditions and signage.
