Arnac-La-Poste offers a range of very different discoveries: a Neolithic dolmen, the Église Saint-Martial, a bicycle museum and trails through the town and surrounding countryside. This means you can plan a visit around cultural history, the history of cycling and outdoor activities. You can compare the trails by distance; for the Sentier Les Chevreuils, its challenging nature is also an important consideration.
Church and Dolmen: Traces of Different Eras
The Église Saint-Martial stands in the town centre. Its construction dates from the 12th to the 14th century, while its fortifications date from the 15th century. Cylindrical watchtowers with crenellations and loopholes are a distinctive feature of its appearance. The church has been listed as a historic monument since 25 September 1925. Inside, it preserves 13th-century wall paintings and an enameled reliquary from Grandmont Abbey. If you would like to see these features, check current access arrangements before your visit.
The Dolmen de l'Héritière is located near La Pierre Levée in Arnac-la-Poste. It dates from the Neolithic period and was protected as a historic monument by decree on 17 June 1983. Together with the medieval church, it offers a long view of history: the focus is not on a single structure, but on different traces from widely separated eras.
Discover Local History on the Trails
The Balade au temps jadis walking route leads through the origins of Arnac-la-Poste. Historic sites and buildings along the route include the church, the former town hall, the Templar residence, the former monastery, the washhouse and the festival grounds. The route thus takes in different chapters of local history, from religious and communal buildings to places of everyday life.
La tournée du facteur offers a route with specific distances: it consists of three circuits. The green route is the shortest at 4.9 km, the blue route is 6.5 km and the red route is 7.6 km. These options help you match your planned distance to your schedule for the day. Check local trail markers and conditions before setting out.
For a longer and more challenging outing, try the Sentier Les Chevreuils: this circular route starts in Arnac-la-Poste, is 40.6 km long and is intended for hiking and mountain biking. As a hiking route, it is aimed at experienced hikers. Along the way, it follows ponds and streams and takes in the town’s architectural heritage. A 26 km variant passes through the hamlet of Branles. Unlike La tournée du facteur, this route description explicitly emphasizes its challenging nature as well as its length.
The Sentier Las Pentas has a scenic focus: it passes through the Limousin hedgerow countryside and offers views of the Haut Limousin landscape. The trails therefore differ not only in length, but also in what they highlight along the way—local history, waterways and architectural heritage, or the open hedgerow countryside.
Cycling History and Other Activities
At the Musée du Vélo du Haut Limousin, the history of the bicycle is traced from its beginnings in 1817 through to the 1980s. The association Les Vélos de Jacques runs the museum; its aims include preserving cycling heritage. Three exhibition areas, more than 100 bicycles and objects related to cycling give space to this theme. There is also a seasonal temporary exhibition.
The collector-owners offer guided tours; tours without a reservation are also possible. Outside the summer season, groups and families can visit the museum by appointment. As seasonal visiting arrangements may change, check the current options in advance. For directions: the museum is 3 km from exit 22 of the A20 motorway.
Another option is the Centre équestre du Moulin des Côtes. It offers riding lessons and rides, horse boarding, equestrian certificate exams and horse training; the programme also includes activities for children with baby ponies. Contact the equestrian centre directly to ask about bookings and availability. Together, the equestrian activities, bicycle museum and walking trails complement the historic sights with different ways to shape your stay.
