The Dronne Valley in Bussière-Galant is designated as a Natura 2000 site. The landscape, walking trails and regional history are at the heart of a stay here. There are also activities with different time commitments, so you can tailor your plans to whether you are most interested in a hike, a ride along a former railway line or a visit to local cultural sites.

Walking trails through chestnut woodland and countryside

Length and duration are two practical factors to consider when choosing a route. The Circuit des sources de la Dronne starts in Bussière-Galant, is 12.1 kilometres long and takes three hours to walk. It is in the Périgord-Limousin Regional Natural Park. Along the way, there are numerous panoramic views of the plateaus of Saint-Yrieix-la-Perche and the Monts de Châlus. The Sentier des Demoiselles also starts in Bussière-Galant and is a 13.9-kilometre circular route.

The Sentier des Demoiselles passes through chestnut woodland and by several viewpoints. More than half of the route is shaded. At the Courbefy viewpoint, which lies on this trail, you can enjoy panoramic views from an altitude of 550 metres. The two routes therefore differ in more than length: the Circuit is defined by its three-hour hike and views of the plateaus mentioned above, while the Sentier offers woodland, shade and viewpoints.

A different way to spend your time: VELORAIL

The VELORAIL takes you along a former railway line for about two hours. The round trip covers twelve kilometres. Each vehicle seats four people, two of whom must pedal. When planning your day, you can fit this roughly two-hour ride in alongside the three-hour hike on the Circuit des sources de la Dronne. Check the operating details in advance to make sure your plans match what is available on the day of your visit.

Church and craft tradition

The Église Saint-Nicolas in Bussière-Galant was built in 1127 and has been listed as a historic monument since 22 May 2003. These two clearly dated milestones give the church a firmly established place in local history: its construction and its later listing as a historic monument.

A local craft tradition involved processing chestnut wood into “feuillards,” or barrel hoops, and exporting them to the Bordeaux region. The Bonnes Fontaines Saint-Eutrope in Courbefy also offer a specific cultural point of interest: cloths, handkerchiefs, socks and ribbons hang from the branches of a wooden cross there.

Activities at Espace Hermeline

There are two accessible fishing platforms at the fishing pond at Espace Hermeline. Check before you travel whether the platforms will be available during your visit. The swimming area includes a beach by the water, which is partly sandy and partly grassy. Swimming and lifeguard supervision are seasonal.

The mini-golf course features 18 holes depicting regional sites and monuments, including the Château de Montbrun and La Pierre folle. The Labyrinthe des Hermines is open to children aged three to twelve; it may operate seasonally. These activities offer different experiences: mini-golf features regional themes, while the fishing pond and swimming area offer activities by the water.

Plan your trip and stay

The D901 departmental road runs through Bussière-Galant, and the village also has an SNCF railway station. If you are planning to travel by train, check the timetables and station services before your trip. When choosing where to stay, you can match these travel options to your planned activities, such as the three-hour hike, the roughly two-hour VELORAIL ride or the seasonal activities at Espace Hermeline. This can help you decide what you want your stay to focus on, without trying to fit every activity into the same day.
