Rancon can be explored through a range of distinct interests: medieval buildings, an annual procession with a statue of Saint Sebastian, a botanical garden, art and a circular trail for discovering the Gartempe Valley.

Architectural history and local tradition

The fortified church of Rancon was built at the end of the 12th century; its bell tower is covered with chestnut shingles. Another 12th-century building, the lantern of the dead is circular, built of granite and 6.66 metres high. The church and the lantern offer contrasting architectural features—from the fortified church with its shingled bell tower to the round granite structure.

The Chapelle Saint-Sébastien is dedicated to the patron saint of conscripts. The chapel houses a 17th-century statue of Saint Sebastian, which is carried in a procession each year. In summer, the chapel also hosts temporary exhibitions by the Salon des Artistes de la Gartempe; dates may vary. If you are planning to visit an exhibition, check the event dates. The procession takes place annually, while the exhibitions are held in summer.

Plants and paths in the garden

The L’Or des Simples botanical garden in Rancon features dozens of medicinal and aromatic plant species. The garden includes a two-kilometre sensory trail. Laurent Pasteur offers walks where you can discover the plants along the paths. The sensory trail is a clearly defined route; the walks focus on the plants beside the path. The garden therefore offers two distinct ways to explore its botanical themes.

Art to admire and try for yourself

The Galerie d’art de Sandra Vanderlick in Rancon exhibits the artist’s paintings. Half-day introductions to oil painting with a palette knife are also available. They are suitable for all skill levels and for participants aged seven and over. The art offering ranges from viewing the paintings to a hands-on introduction to the technique. The half-day duration provides a useful timeframe for planning; the skill levels and minimum age indicate who the activity is intended for.

Circular trail and directions

The Sentier de la Gartempe is a circular trail starting in Rancon that allows visitors to discover the Gartempe Valley. Unlike the buildings and art offerings, the trail provides an opportunity to explore the Gartempe Valley. The lantern of the dead is a 10- to 20-minute walk from the train station. This walking time offers a useful point of reference for one of the historic buildings; it is separate from the circular trail.
