A 7.5-hectare body of water in the heart of town, historic buildings and two moderate circular walks give Peyrat-Le-Château its distinctive character. When choosing a destination, you can therefore weigh up whether you are especially interested in local history, walking trails or protected landscapes. The processing of plants and natural materials is also part of the local scene.
A pond in the centre, woodland spanning two communes
The Étang de Peyrat is in the centre of Peyrat-Le-Château. Its area of 7.5 hectares makes it a clearly defined landmark in the town centre. The Bois de Crozat is on a different scale: this protected Natura 2000 woodland extends across the communes of Peyrat-Le-Château and Beaumont-du-Lac. The pond in town and the woodland spanning commune boundaries offer two different perspectives on the landscape.
Buildings and everyday history
The Église Saint-Martin et Saint-Martial is listed as a historic monument; this protected status has applied since 6 February 1926. The Tour Carrée tells a story of a different historical function: the medieval defensive tower also served as a gate and was built in the 15th century, when the fortifications were redesigned. The Fontaine St Martin offers a glimpse of everyday life in the past: it once supplied the town with drinking water.
The Musée de la Résistance dedicates three exhibition rooms to the Resistance maquis of Georges Guingouin and the first Limousin FTPF brigade. Various objects, weapons and photographs are on display. The Ruisseau des Moulins near Peyrat-Le-Château is also home to remains of very old mills, including millstones and waterworks. The town’s history thus brings together military, religious and everyday themes, alongside traces of earlier milling.
Comparing two circular walks
The Circuit de Peyrat-le-Château is a 6.2-kilometre moderate circular walking route. The municipal route guide from December 2025 lists 100 metres of ascent and says the route is accessible to mountain bikes; check trail conditions before setting out. Le Ruisseau des Moulins is a 7.1-kilometre, also moderate circular walk, marked in purple. As route specifications can change, check the route portal before departure.
Both routes are described as moderate circular walks, but differ in length and other listed features: Le Ruisseau des Moulins is 0.9 kilometres longer, while the Circuit is listed with its ascent and mountain-bike accessibility. The purple markings belong to Le Ruisseau des Moulins. On the Circuit, there is also the opportunity to enter a building open to the public and see the millstones of a former paper mill. Check local conditions before visiting.
Plants and crafts
Dame des bois is associated with gathering and processing aromatic and medicinal plants. These are made into herbal teas, macerations, syrups and natural plant candles. Carnivorae is associated with custom-made knives and individually adapted fishing rods made from processed natural materials. Availability may vary at both; confirm before visiting.
