Rochechouart brings together the history of a meteorite impact, stone landmarks, and routes through the town. The château stands on a rocky promontory above the Graine and Vayres valleys; impactite stones were used in its construction. A walking tour explains the meteorite event, while churches, contemporary art, and the market offer further reasons to explore.

The Astrobleme and Its Regional Scale

The Rochechouart-Chassenon astrobleme was formed by a meteorite impact about 210 million years ago. It is the only known astrobleme in France to date and the fifth-largest impact structure in Europe. The Réserve Naturelle de l’astroblème Rochechouart-Chassenon extends across five municipalities in the Haute-Vienne and Charente départements. The protected landscape therefore reaches beyond the town of Rochechouart.

At the Espace Météorite Paul Pellas, a permanent exhibition devoted to impact science is open year-round. Check the latest visitor information before your visit. This lets you explore the town’s geological background as an exhibition topic before or after following one of the routes that reveal traces of the astrobleme.

Château and Churches: Architectural History in the Town

The Château de Rochechouart preserves architectural elements from the 13th and 15th centuries, including the keep and a Renaissance gallery. Its position on the rocky promontory opens up views over the Graine and Vayres valleys; the use of impactite stones also connects its architectural history with the geology of the area.

The Église Saint-Sauveur is an example of 11th-century Romanesque art. Its distinctive spiral spire was built between 1767 and 1774. The Église Saint-Julien is a former monastery church built in the 11th century by monks from Charroux Abbey in Poitou; it preserves much of its original fabric. The two churches thus illustrate different aspects of architectural history: Saint-Sauveur with its Romanesque art and later spire, and Saint-Julien with its preserved fabric dating from its foundation.

Routes Between Geology, Art, and History

The Sentier d’interprétation de l’astroblème is a 2 km circular walk around the Château de Rochechouart and through the town. Five stops explain the meteorite event. If you’re looking for a route with a clearly stated length and fixed themed stops, this walk offers practical guidance. Tèrra Aventura: L’astroquête leads from the Romanesque church with its twisted spire to the 13th-century château, linking contemporary art with the Middle Ages. Check the route’s current availability in advance.

The Circuit de la météorite connects Babaudus, the lake, and Rochechouart town center; there are numerous panoramic views along the way. This offers a choice of different perspectives: a walk with five explanatory stops about the impact, a route between the church and château with links to art and the Middle Ages, or a circuit taking in the places and panoramas mentioned.

Market, Lake, and Contemporary Art

Rochechouart’s market takes place on Friday and Saturday mornings. It offers fruit, vegetables, and regional products. If you’re planning a visit to the market, it’s best to confirm the dates locally before your trip.

At Plan d’eau de Boischenu, there is a walking path, a picnic table, and play structures for children. As municipal recreational facilities may change over time, check in advance whether the listed amenities are currently available. The Musée d’Art Contemporain in Rochechouart holds more than 300 works of contemporary art. Along with the Romanesque churches and historic architectural elements of the château, this collection broadens the picture of the cultural themes Rochechouart offers in addition to its geological history.
