In Aureil, you can combine cultural history and walks during your stay. The Priory Church of Saint-Jean-l'Évangéliste provides a cultural focus, while several trails offer different perspectives on the rural surroundings. For planning, a straightforward comparison is useful: the Sentier de Muret is shorter, with a walking time of about one hour, while the Sentier du Puy takes approximately two hours and offers panoramic views. This lets you weigh up the time available and the kind of outing you want, rather than trying to fit every trail into your itinerary.

Priory and Church

The hermit Saint Gaucher founded the Priory of Saint-Jean-l'Évangéliste in 1080; the church was consecrated in 1093. The present priory church dates back to a building from the 12th century, which was extended in the 13th century. These dates distinguish the priory’s early origins from the later construction phases of the present building. The church is open to the public and provides a tangible cultural anchor for your stay.

The magnificent wooden choir furnishings date from the late 15th century. They add a distinctly later phase of design to the building’s history. Anyone interested in the priory’s development can distinguish its foundation, consecration, extension and furnishings chronologically: the dates mark different stages, not a single construction event.

Hiking Trails by Time and Landscape

The easy Sentier de Muret is 3.5 kilometres long and takes about one hour on foot. The Sentier du Puy is also easy; it stretches for 7.4 kilometres and takes approximately two hours to walk. The two trails therefore differ mainly in length and the time required. The Sentier du Puy offers panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. If you want to spend less time walking, Muret is the shorter option; Puy offers a longer route and views across the surroundings.

The landscape also helps guide your choice. The Sentier des Ifs starts at the church square and passes through fields and alongside ponds. The Sentier du Pigeonnier crosses hilly countryside with rural heritage sites; a dovecote can be seen along the way. On the Sentier de Muret, you can also discover dry-stone walls typical of the region and the church with its rooster. The trails each offer a different focus: open fields and ponds, rolling countryside or individual features of rural heritage.

Les Boucles d'Aureil in May

The running event “Les Boucles d'Aureil” offers another way to plan your stay around a specific date. It takes place every year on the first Sunday in May and features two running routes of 11.1 and 21.2 kilometres. This is a different sporting focus from the easy hiking trails with their stated walking times. If you want to plan your trip around the event, check the date of the specific edition before booking. For a stay without the event, you can instead focus on the hiking trails, their landscapes and a visit to the priory church.
