A deeply incised valley, a historic château and several distinct cycling options give Bonnac-La-Côté a variety of highlights. When planning, consider the landscape and history alongside practical choices about route length, mode of transport and fishing regulations. Bonnac-La-Côté can be reached via the A20, exit 27; check road conditions before setting out.

Valley, protected landscape and history

The La Mazelle valley is deeply incised, with wooded areas and numerous bodies of water. Salesse forms a more clearly defined landscape area: this protected site, designated as a “Site inscrit”, includes the remarkable hamlets of Salesse and Lavaud in the communes of Bonnac-La-Côté and Compreignac. It lies in an agricultural valley with an open landscape, bordered by wooded slopes and hills.

The Château de Leychoisier is a historic monument in the valley. Its oldest tower is believed to date from the 9th century. As the château is a private property, public access may vary; check visiting arrangements in advance. The former monasteries in the village centre and in Drouille Noire belonged to the Benedictines. It is best to check locally whether any structural traces remain and are accessible. Chapels were added to the church in the 15th century.

Cycling and walking

The Circuit des Vallées is 13 km long. It takes about three hours on foot and about one hour by mountain bike. These times are approximate and refer to different modes of transport. Another option is the 14 km Tèrra-Aventura cycling route “Les cyclistes ont la côte!”, which starts at the Vélodrome Raymond Poulidor. Before setting out, check the route signage and conditions; for Tèrra-Aventura, also check availability and geocaching content.

The Vélodrome Raymond Poulidor has a 250 m concrete track. Since 2019, an inflatable roof has made it possible to use the velodrome year-round. Before visiting, check the current rules for public use. Bonnac-La-Côté also offers certified Nordic walking routes, designated for different difficulty levels. Check route conditions before your outing.

Fishing at two bodies of water

Fishing and relaxation in a green setting are possible at Étang de Mortemare. Fishing regulations may change, so check the applicable rules in advance. The Carpodrome de Tracheras is open for fishing year-round. Fishing there is strictly catch and release. Access is reserved for holders of a fishing licence with the “Carpodrome – Tracheras” or “Parcours spécialisés” option. As opening times and permit requirements may change, confirm the current rules before your visit.
