Heritage and Cycling in Nantiat

For a stay in Nantiat, cultural history and cycling can be considered as distinct focuses. Notable themes include the Menhir de la Croix Parot, Église Saint-Vincent, the baptistery and cycling route C14. They offer different insights: into a granite monolith and local tradition, sacred architecture and a cycling route through the town. When choosing your accommodation, you can therefore first consider whether you would like to focus your stay more on cultural history or on cycling.

By Bike or TER

Cycling route C14 is recognized by the Fédération Française de Cyclisme. It passes through Nantiat and continues into the heart of the Monts de Blond. This gives you a concrete cycling option to consider when planning your trip; the recognition is an additional point of reference if you are interested in this focus. The route and the cultural sites represent different ways of discovering Nantiat.

Nantiat TER station has a TER ticket machine as well as bicycle and car parking. If you are arriving by TER, check the current TER page before your journey: station facilities may change. This lets you take the listed facilities into account when planning your arrival, without assuming a timetable or connection.

Sacred Buildings and Architectural History

Église Saint-Vincent in Nantiat was built between 1829 and 1833. Its nave has three bays and is flanked by four semicircular chapels. A bay is a section of the nave: the description “three-bay” therefore refers to its layout, while the four chapels complete the flanking arrangement. In 1867, the church was decorated with murals. Its construction period, spatial layout and painted decoration thus offer three distinct aspects to consider when learning about this building.

The baptistery in Nantiat belongs to an older church complex: it is a remnant of the former church dating from the 11th century. Originally, it was partly underground and attached to this church. It is considered a forerunner of the holy water font. Both its former architectural relationship to the church and this interpretation are important to understanding it. In this way, the baptistery as a remnant of a former church differs from a sacred object described solely by its later use.

Menhir and Château de Montauran

The Menhir de la Croix Parot is a 3.26-metre-high monolith made of fine-grained granite. In the past, a local tradition held that young women placed pine needles in the hollow at its tip to find a husband. The menhir was also presumably consecrated and Christianized in the 11th or 12th century. This cultural subject brings together the stone’s distinctive form, the former tradition and the explicitly probable religious interpretation, while keeping them as distinct aspects.

Château de Montauran in Nantiat was built in the 15th century and retains two fortified towers. These features offer a different perspective on local history than the layout of Église Saint-Vincent or the tradition associated with the menhir: here, the focus is on the period of construction and fortified architecture. Together with cycling route C14, these themes show whether you would prefer to focus your stay on historic buildings and traditions or on cycling.
