Saint-Junien offers two distinctive themes for a stay: leather and glove-making, and the riverside landscapes of the Glane and Vienne. The Cité du cuir opened in December 2025 as an immersive museum. It explains the process of making leather gloves step by step and places it in the context of the local leather and glove-making trades. This hands-on craft theme sits alongside Romanesque architecture, art in the city and walks by the water.

Leather Craft and Art in the City

If you’d like to explore the craft hands-on, you can take part in leather workshops at the Cité du cuir. Participants make a personal leather item. The workshop programme may vary, so check what’s on offer during your stay.

L’Échappée des Arts offers a different way to experience art: this free, open-air art trail links works installed around Saint-Junien. The route takes you to public art without limiting your visit to a single building.

Romanesque Architecture and Ostensions

The Collégiale de Saint-Junien is one of the largest and oldest Romanesque churches in the Limousin. Audio guides enhance your visit; guided tours for groups are available by reservation. The church is also home to a monumental tomb containing the sarcophagus of Saint Junien. The architecture and tomb offer two distinct points of interest: the Romanesque church as a building and the memory of its patron saint.

The terraces of the Abbaye de Saint-Amand also have their own appeal. They form a terraced garden that is open to the public all year round and overlooks the Vienne. If you’d like to combine culture with time outdoors, this is another place connected to the town’s history and landscape, alongside its churches.

The Ostensions of Saint-Junien take place every seven years. The next edition is scheduled for June 2030. The tradition includes a historic procession with 1,500 participants. If you’d like to plan your trip around it, check the event dates when making your arrangements.

River Trails and Nature Along the Glane

Two routes of different lengths are available for walks. The Les Feutrières circular trail is 6.3 kilometres long and takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes. It follows the Glane through a landscape known for its fauna and flora, which inspired the painter Corot. At three kilometres, the Circuit des 2 Rivières is the shorter of the two trails. It runs from the Chapelle Notre-Dame via the Pont Sainte-Élisabeth, along the banks of the Vienne and the Glane, to the Chalet Corot. The figures make it easy to compare the routes directly; an approximate duration is also given for Les Feutrières. Trail conditions can change, so check them before setting out.

The Site Corot is a good spot for riverside walks and fishing. It is a natural area on the Glane, classified as a ZNIEFF. You may see royal ferns and white-throated dippers there; sightings can vary by season. The area adds a nature-focused experience to the trails, beyond simply covering a set distance.

Plan Your Visit and Getting There

The walk from Saint-Junien station to the Cité du cuir is estimated to take 11 minutes. Check this walking time again before your trip. Some workshops in Saint-Junien open their doors to the public and have factory shops; check in advance whether you can visit a particular one. Between the museum, Romanesque church, garden, art trail and river routes, you can shape your stay around the things that interest you most.
