Fromental offers cultural and historical points of interest at Église Saint-Martin, Château de Montautre and the Menhir des Fichades. The Dolmen de Pierre Levée provides an additional opportunity for chronological comparison. Each site has its own specific features: reconstruction and paintings at the church, its landscape setting and distance from the railway station at the Château, and measurements, dates and finds at the archaeological sites. If you are looking for a hotel in Fromental, you can choose the focus of your stay based on your interest in architectural history, archaeology or travelling to the Château.

Église Saint-Martin: Reconstruction and Painted Features

Église Saint-Martin de Fromental was completely rebuilt at the end of the 18th century. Painted features dating from the late 18th and 19th centuries have been preserved. The reconstruction and these features therefore represent distinct, partly overlapping periods. The church as a whole was listed as a historic monument by decree on 13 February 2017. Its history thus brings together two different aspects: a clearly dated structural change and paintings preserved from several periods.

Château de Montautre: Landscape and Getting There

Château de Montautre is a visitor attraction at 1 Montautre, 87250 Fromental; it is available to visitors in 2026. It overlooks the landscapes of Limousin. Fromental SNCF railway station is 1.5 km in a straight line from the Château. This distance is a point of reference between the station and the Château, but it is not a route length. Check the route and train connections separately when planning your journey. It is also advisable to confirm visiting arrangements for your chosen date.

Menhir des Fichades: Measurements and Discovery History

The Menhir des Fichades, an archaeological site, is located in Bagnol, 87250 Fromental. The stone rises 3.55 m above the ground and has been classified as a historic monument since 1945. About 3,000 pieces of lithic industry—that is, worked stones—have been found in the surrounding areas. These finds provide evidence of human presence in the Late Neolithic, between 2900 and 2150 BC. The find locations and the height measurement refer to different things: the pieces come from the surrounding areas, while 3.55 m is the height of the menhir above the ground.

Dolmen de Pierre Levée: Dating and Accessibility

The Dolmen de Pierre Levée is dated to between 3788 and 3389 BC. Archaeological objects dating from the Late Neolithic, as well as from the Gallo-Roman and medieval periods, were found in its chamber. The dolmen’s date and the dates of the chamber finds are distinct pieces of information: the first refers to the dolmen, while the second covers the wide range of objects found there. The dolmen is not accessible to people with reduced mobility; accessibility is subject to on-site conditions.

In a direct chronological comparison, the dolmen’s date predates the period of human presence evidenced by the finds around the menhir. The reconstruction of Église Saint-Martin took place millennia later, at the end of the 18th century. This makes it possible to distinguish the archaeological periods from the church’s building history.
