Saint-Martial-sur-Isop can be explored through two themes: the landscape along the Isop and the religious heritage around Saint-Martial Church. The Isop is a stream about 20 kilometres long that flows into the Blourde. It runs along the foot of the villages of Saint-Martial and Saint-Barbant. The commune’s landscape includes hills, woods, streams and meadows. When planning your stay, you can decide whether to focus mainly on the Rochers de l’Isop and the circular trail, or on the crypt and the church’s religious objects.
Rochers de l’Isop: geology
The Rochers de l’Isop offer a tangible insight into the area’s geological development. Their landforms were created where the Isop carved a passage through a diorite massif. The rocks themselves are the result of a slow process of spheroidal weathering: mechanical and chemical erosion exposed the resistant cores of the rock. The river, massif and rock formations are therefore part of the same geological story, even though they illustrate different stages of the process. The Rochers de l’Isop have been a protected natural site since 1989.
Circular trail and road access
The Rochers de l’Isop route starts in Saint-Martial-sur-Isop and is laid out as a circular trail. Its circular layout is a practical distinction if you prefer a loop to a route between two endpoints. To drive from Limoges to the Rochers de l’Isop, the route follows the RN141, the RD9, the RD675 and then the RD4 to Saint-Martial. Before setting off, check the route for current roadworks or closures.
The Grotte du Prussien
The entrance to the Grotte du Prussien is still visible. Local access conditions may vary; check them before visiting if the grotto is part of your plans.
Crypt and religious heritage
Beneath Saint-Martial Church lies a crypt, one of six religious buildings with a crypt in the Haute-Vienne département. It is reached by a stone staircase. The crypt contains a spring that was used to baptise worshippers. During excavations in 2004, a rounded pit set into soft stone was also discovered there; at the time, clear water flowed continuously at its bottom. The stone staircase, spring and archaeological find reveal different aspects of the crypt: its architectural layout, its former religious use and an archaeological discovery.
The memorial to those who fell in the First World War of 1914 to 1918 in Saint-Martial Church is listed as a protected object. The statue of Saint Leonard in the parish church of Saint-Martial is also listed as a protected object. If you specifically want to see the statue, check locally whether it is on display and accessible.
