Pierre-Buffière brings together a Romanesque church, Gallo-Roman remains and a hike with views of several viaducts. This means you can plan a trip with culture, a puzzle-solving experience or time outdoors as different priorities. From Limoges, take the A20 towards Toulouse and leave at exit 40.
Church and Gallo-Roman History
The Eglise Sainte-Croix de Pierre-Buffière is a Romanesque church dating from 1060, which was remodelled in the 14th century. The building is made of granite, and some of its roofs are covered with slate slabs. Since 1838, 18 blue-glazed porcelain plaques in the shade known as “bleu de four” have adorned the portal. The church houses relics of Saint Cosmas and Saint Damian and is a parish of the Ostensions.
Villa d’Antone was built almost 2,000 years ago, in the 1st century AD, and developed during the heyday of the Pax Romana. Its Gallo-Roman remains lie on a plateau above the Briance and Blanzou valleys, opposite Pierre-Buffière. Guided tours are available by reservation; educational activities are also offered for groups and school classes. Confirm the visiting arrangements before you travel. The church thus offers a focus on sacred architecture, while Villa d’Antone draws attention primarily to its Gallo-Roman remains and their location above the valleys.
Hiking and a Puzzle between the Briance and the Viaducts
The Circuit des trois rivières et des trois viaducs is an easy, 9.9-kilometre hiking trail; it takes about 2 hours and 45 minutes to walk. It follows the Briance, passing beneath a viaduct, and offers panoramas of the viaducts and the Pont de l’Hermitage. The trail is part of the PDIPR hiking trail network. Parking is available at Place du 8 mai 1945. Allow about 2 hours and 45 minutes of walking time for the hike.
Tèrra Aventura: Des viaducs à la Pars urbana d’Antone is a playful experience in Pierre-Buffière. The puzzles bring together 1st-century Gallo-Roman remains and impressive railway structures. The experience combines archaeological themes with railway structures, adding a playful element alongside Villa d’Antone’s historical themes.
Market and Trip Planning
The Marché à Pierre-Buffière takes place on Friday mornings on Rue de Chantemiaule; the stalls offer fruit and vegetables, fish, meat and cheese. For dates after 18 December 2026, please check the current schedule.
When planning your dates, it is useful to distinguish between the market, the villa and the hiking trail: the market is held on Friday mornings, a reservation is required for a tour of the villa, and the Circuit takes about 2 hours and 45 minutes to walk. This lets you decide in advance whether a weekday visit, a reservation or the hike’s duration is the first thing to sort out.
