Saint-Priest-Sous-Aixe offers several ways to shape a stay: the Forêt des Loges is ideal for nature and outdoor activities, while the church and Moulins du Daumail offer a glimpse into history. If you are planning an overnight stay, you can start by considering your interests. For hiking, you can compare two named trails by length and difficulty; if you are interested in cultural history, you can choose between a Romanesque-Gothic church and the history of the mills.
Forest and trails to suit your interests
180 hectares of the Forêt des Loges are open to walkers. There are trails for hiking, horseback riding and mountain biking. The forest is also designated a ZNIEFF, meaning a natural area of ecological, faunal and floral interest. This nature-focused destination therefore offers specific ways to enjoy the outdoors alongside an official nature-related classification.
The Sentier des Étangs is 3.5 kilometres long, is classified as easy, has an elevation gain of 119 metres and is marked in green. The Parcours de santé du Coeur is 6 kilometres long, is of moderate difficulty, has an elevation gain of 192 metres and is marked with a red heart. The two trails therefore differ in both length and difficulty: the Sentier des Étangs is shorter and classified as easy, while the Parcours de santé du Coeur is longer and of moderate difficulty. Elevation gain and trail markers provide further specific points of comparison when choosing a route.
The route “Balade en forêt d’Aixe – Les Loges” has a historic feature: it follows an old Roman road that is now used as a forest track. The route thus brings together two points in time—the Roman road and its present-day use as a forest track. Anyone interested in the history of roads will find a clearly defined connection between an older road and its current function.
Mills and church: history across different eras
Traces of a grain mill with seven pairs of millstones dating from the 13th century have been recorded at the Moulins du Daumail. In 1840, the mills were converted into so-called stone or pebble mills. These supplied the porcelain industry with processed kaolin slurry and enamel. The history of the mills thus spans different uses: from grain processing, associated with the 13th-century remains, to supplying the porcelain industry after the conversion in 1840.
The church of Saint-Priest-sous-Aixe is a Romanesque building that was rebuilt in the Gothic period. Its furnishings also reflect different periods: it houses a Romanesque granite holy-water font and a 17th-century altarpiece that was altered in the 19th century. Looking at the building and its furnishings, you can distinguish the Romanesque features from the Gothic rebuilding and the later alterations to the altar furnishings. The altarpiece is not only from a later period than the Romanesque building; it was also altered again in a subsequent century.
